Taking Part Making Art

Taking Part Making Art is just one of Jersey Mencap projects offering more choice and variety to those with a learning disability in Jersey

With six art sessions per week tutored by local, professional artists this buzzing project is proud to have earned its place within the art scene and regularly contributes to local exhibitions and competitions.

People with a learning disability are among the most disadvantaged and potentially excluded people in today’s society according to research carried out by national Mencap and its vital that our members have choice and opportunity to thrive.

Many adults with a learning disability would welcome the opportunity to work but with a lack of employment opportunities, it is important to have structure to the week and activities to look forward to with the chance to socialise with a variety of different people.

The project supports positive life skills such as using public transport independently to access the art project and other skills such as working in a group and good communication. These skills might enhance individuals confidence and self-esteem.

Through art our members can showcase their achievements and help to breakdown misconceptions or barriers often surrounding disabilities by creating something to be proud of.

Our acheivements include public art installations in a variety of mainstream locations including music festivals and parks.  We have been proud to support the Skipton Open studios for a number of years and to have installed all the artwork in Beresford Street Kitchen café.

Jersey Mencap recognise the importance of variety within this longstanding project and regularly host alfresco art sessions and welcome guest art tutors who bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm. We are fortunate to have a core team of amazing art tutors who encourage, motivate and support our members to reach their potential and our volunteers who quickly become an important part of each session.

The project is totally reliant on donations and grants. If you would like to support this essential project please call 01534 866622 or email alex.wiles@jerseymencap.org
