Coin Hoard Tour

Ancient coins from Jersey’s world-famous Celtic coin hoard will be making their way around the Island as part of a special pop-up exhibition. The FREE touring exhibition, which is kindly supported by Benest & Syvret will come to your Parish/Public Hall over the next year.

The exhibition will spend a month in each parish hall over the next year, giving as many Islanders as possible the opportunity to view some of the Iron Age coins, and to find out more about the story behind the hoard. Entry to the exhibition is free.

The massive hoard, which contained nearly 70,000 coins, was found in a field in 2012 by metal detectorists Reg Mead and Richard Miles. It had lain buried for 2,000 years. Since then, Jersey Heritage conservators, archaeologists and volunteers have painstakingly unpicked and studied the hoard, watched every step of the way by the world’s media and a fascinated public.

Ancient gold torques, silver coins, and gold and silver jewellery excavated from the hoard are on display at La Hougue Bie Museum (during normal opening hours, please see our Places to Visit section), and it is some of these treasures that are part of the pop-up exhibition.  A useful child-friendly guide has been designed to help children understand where the hoard has come from, it’s history and who burried it.  The pack is free to download here or available, thanks to Benest & Syvret at each Parish Hall.
