He gently, but expertly, moulded the band until it now has a repertoire of nearly 1,000 songs. As the band became more and more well known they branched out from busking to performing at many local events – fairs, weddings, parties – you name it they have probably been there and done it!
This fledgling band, with big ideas, now numbers over 20 players, although not all play at every event.
Despite all the performance requests nowadays, they still go back to their roots and try to fit in busking once a week – generally on a Saturday by the cider press in front of Marks and Spencer in St. Helier.
In 2015 the Club decided to use their ever increasing skills to raise money for local charities, and so their designated Charity of the Year was born. Since then a massive £41,000 has been raised for predominantly Jersey charities, with 2025’s contribution still being counted. To date, starting from the Alzheimer’s Association, they have made donations to the Stroke Association, Eyecan , Friends of Jersey Oncology, Australian Wildfire Appeal, The Shelter Trust, Ukraine Appeal, Autism Jersey, Healing Waves, Jersey Motor Neurone Disease and, this year, they are performing to raise money for the Jersey St. Vincent de Paul Society.
The JUC band are very happy to be able to do so much for local charities. But it’s a win-win situation, because whilst raising money is wonderful, enjoying themselves playing an instrument, singing, having fun and providing colourful entertainment is the icing on the cake.
