BUNKERS OPEN THIS WEEKEND!

EASTER SUNDAY 12:30-3PM
RESISTANCE NEST MILLBROOK ANTI-TANK GUN CASEMATE

This bunker is located on St. Aubin’s Bay promenade opposite La Motte Ford next to the ‘Old Station Café.

An example of a flanking anti-tank gun casemate mounting an ex-Czech 4.7cm PakK 36 (t) anti-tank gun with a coaxial MG 37 (t) machine gun which was built into a Victorian slipway to both block access off the beach to an attacker and camouflage the bunker behind a granite sea wall, the bunker largely escaped post war stripping out and scrap drives and today boasts a near time capsule appearance from original panelling with original pin up posters still attached to rare complete examples of the ventilation equipment used to protect the bunker’s crew from gas attack! The bunker is also unusual for mounting a small observation bell, which a replica now replaces the original removed for scrap in c1948, and the bunker’s lighting still uses the original German cabling! Details of the bunker’s wartime operation are provided thanks to Herr Henkel who commanded the bunker in 1943/44.

BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY 11-4PM
BATTERIE MOLTKE – LES LANDES COMMON, ST. OUEN’S

Originally intended as Kriegsmarine (Naval) ‘Marine Battery 1’ armed with 4 modern quick firing 15cm turreted guns which never arrived thanks to the Allied bombing raids in Europe, so the site was handed over to the Army Coastal Artillery, armed with 155mm field guns and named Batterie Moltke. The CIOS maintain and restore the vast and impressive interconnected complex of Number 4 gun which consists of a personnel shelter, 2 ammunition bunkers, the underground gun emplacement intended for the quick firing 15cm turreted gun and a ‘temporary’ emplacement mounting a 15.5cm ex-French GPF field gun recovered from the base of nearby cliffs where it was dumped by the British Army in 1946! There is also ample information on various aspects of the Occupation for the interested visitor and knowledgeable members on hand to help you with your visit. See if you can spot the hobnailed boot prints in the corridors!?
