In this special event, Poet Laureate Simon Armitage looks back on his career, with readings from his earliest collections to his book of lyrics, Never Good With Horses, as well as new poems.
Simon Armitage, born in Marsden, West Yorkshire, England, has led a multifaceted career that spans poetry, academia, fiction, translation, and performance. After earning degrees in geography and social work, he worked as a probation officer before devoting himself to poetry.
Armitage served as Professor of Poetry at the University of Oxford and the University of Leeds, and in 2019, he was appointed UK Poet Laureate. His distinctive style combines deadpan delivery, dark humor, and a keen eye for modern life, drawing inspiration from poets like Ted Hughes, W.H. Auden, and Philip Larkin.
Armitage has published numerous poetry collections, including award-winning works such as Kid and The Shout. Additionally, he has written fiction, memoirs, and works for radio, television, film, and theater. Armitage’s journey along the Pennine Way is chronicled in ” Walking Home and Walking Away. Renowned as a poet, teacher, and cultural figure, Simon Armitage continues to captivate audiences with his poetic prowess and diverse literary contributions.
