It doesn’t matter what kind of problem you have or how big or small it may seem compared to the problems other people have. What matters to us is how your life is making you feel.
Sometimes people get to a point where they feel they can’t cope, where it all feels too much to handle. It’s worse if you feel you can’t talk to anyone about what’s weighing on your mind.
That’s where we come in. You can talk to us about anything that’s troubling you. If something is hurting or upsetting you, talk to us about it.
Whatever life’s done to you or whatever you’ve done, we’re here.
We give you someone to talk to
When you contact us, one of our 23,000 Samaritans volunteers will answer. We volunteers are ordinary people. We’re there for you to talk to about how you feel. We freely give you our time and attention.
We listen and help you talk things through
We listen to you and help you talk through your worries and troubles. We’re not afraid to explore difficult areas with you.
We don’t judge
We won’t judge you. We take you as you are, and respect whatever feelings or thoughts you may be having.
We keep things anonymous
You don’t have to tell us your name, but you can if you’d like to. Talking to someone you don’t know can sometimes feel easier than talking to someone you do know.
We can help you explore your options
We won’t tell you “you ought to do this” or “you should do that”. We don’t give advice. But when you’re ready, we can help you to explore your options. Given the chance, many people are able to find a way through their problems themselves, if there is someone giving them time and space to talk.
We support you to make your own decisions
We’ll support you to come to your own decisions about what’s best for you. You’re likely to know yourself better than anyone and be the best judge of what’s right for you. We’ll support you to take what steps you can to cope with what life’s thrown at you.
We can explore suicidal feelings with you
By encouraging people to talk through suicidal feelings, we hope that fewer people will choose to die by suicide.
We know many people who call us are not suicidal and, by asking about suicidal feelings, we’re not making assumptions about how you feel. But we’re giving you the opportunity to talk about feeling suicidal if you need to.
We’re available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
We’re available all hours, by phone, email (and in future online chat), every day of the year so we’re here when you need us. You will get through to one of our 200 branches (not necessarily one local to you)
Why we volunteer for Samaritans
Our branches are run almost entirely by us volunteers. As well as our helpline services, we provide fundraising, publicity, administration, training and much more. We also manage and lead Samaritans nationally, working with a small team of paid staff.
We choose to volunteer for Samaritans for many different reasons – to help others, to give something back, to do something meaningful or because we believe in what Samaritans does. We may have gone through difficult times of our own or with someone close to us.
Why we need support from the public
Samaritans has been here since 1953.
Over that time, we’ve grown from having a few thousand to many millions of conversations with people each year.
We are a charity. We aren’t run on government funding. We depend on public and business donations.
