During the political upheaval of medieval Italy, being sent into exile was a common enough experience for ‘exile poetry’ to be established as its own genre. In this talk, Katie Bastiman will explore some of the key writings of exiled poets, including Dante Alighieri. These works pose questions and explore concerns that we share today, including the pain of rejection, the confusion of understanding our own identities and place in the world, and the complicated emotional tether that connects us to our home, no matter where we are.
