The monumental events of January 1781, when a French invasion force landed in Jersey
Britain was at war with France on and off throughout the 18th century. In the 1760s, Britain and Jersey set about a campaign of privateering, or licensing pirating, which inflicted considerable damage on French trade in the English Channel. It wasn’t long before retaliation was on the cards. This display explores that time using John Singleton Copley’s painting ‘The Death of Major Peirson’ and artefacts in the Jersey Heritage Collection. The exhibition also considers the abiding influence of these historic events upon the Island’s self-image.
Visit the Aspiring Geopark Visitor Centre to discover how Jersey has been shaped by tide and time.
This FREE Visitor Centre will help you to understand and explore Jersey’s amazing places from new perspectives. So get ready to go out and about around the Island and enjoy all of the beauty and history Jersey has to offer.
This regular artisans’ market takes place in the pretty harbour village of St. Aubin in front of the parish hall.
There will be local wares on display, including goods from producers and craft workers.
All goods sold by Genuine Jersey Members will have been crafted, brewed, baked or processed by the stall holder, so come along and soak up the atmosphere while celebrating Jersey’s finest.

Andrew Newton returns following a sold-out show at Jersey Arts Centre in June!
“The old hypno-tricks are gone, replaced by new, more inventive and intelligent material. Andrew Newton’s talent lies in his ability to magic up the absurdly funny from the minds of ordinary people and his professionalism and experience shine through. The audience laughs hysterically while he tiptoes along a very narrow line…the sketch where volunteers shared their experiences of being kidnapped by aliens had us all laughing hysterically…there was more…much more…and last nights’ audience rewarded him with non-stop laughter from beginning to end. “

Engraved stones found in Jersey are the the earliest art forms discovered in the British Isles
In 2010, 15,000 years after the first pioneer hunter-gatherers arrived in Jersey, archaeologists came to the area of Les Varines to the south-east of the Island, where stone artefacts had been discovered after the fields were ploughed. Excavations took place over the next eight years. They revealed hearths, paving stones of a camp and thousands of flint tools left behind by the hunters. Ten fragile fragments of engraved stone were also discovered, each marked with abstract designs. This display tells the story of the pioneer people, and investigates the meaning of these mysterious stones, which have been described as the earliest art forms to have yet been discovered in the British Isles.
The world’s largest Celtic hoard was discovered in Jersey, this exhibition explores why people might have buried it there.
In 2012 the world’s largest Celtic hoard was discovered buried in a field in Jersey. This exhibition explores what might have led people to bury a hoard of 70,000 coins and jewellery in Jersey, 2000 years ago and looks closely at some of the items found within the hoard.
Explore the time when Roman armies marched through Europe, 2000 years ago, they left behind them a trail of death and destruction which almost wiped out the culture and civilization of the Celtic people who lived there. Using scientific and archaeological research we can learn more about the people that buried the hoard, about their lives and customs. Ground-breaking research can tell us more about the moment and the place the hoard was buried. It might even challenge some long-held ideas about why hoards were buried.
We are so grateful to Jersey Heritage and the Parish of St Clement for allowing the Jersey Tourist Guides Association (JTGA) , as Guardians of the Tower, to give free access from 10:00 a.m.to 4:00 p.m. to the public on the first Sunday of every month April to October 2023.
It has held a commanding position on the South-East coast of the Island since its conception in 1778 and subsequent construction. The brainchild of the then Governor, General Sir Henry Seymour Conway, who ordered a series of round towers to be built in 1778, Le Hocq tower has guarded the promontory of Le Hocq, and Le Havre es Fontaines for almost 250 years.Image courtesy of Jean Lelliott
From a strong Napoleonic defensive tower of the late 1770’s, to a refortified Occupation defensive tower of the 1940’s, and a Radio Tower of the 1970’s, this fabulous granite structure has a rich history.
The JTGA Committee are delighted to be able to offer a series of open days at Le Hocq Tower throughout this year, beginning from Sunday 2nd April, and on the first Sunday of every month thereafter. October will be our last open day of the year (due to weather)Image Courtesy Ali-Robinson
Wander through the tower rooms with us, and imagine the lives of its occupants through the centuries. Learn of its history from the expert Guides who have volunteered their time to allow you access to this historical monument, and hear of the fascinating surroundings.
The Tower will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the following dates, so pop these in your diary and come along to visit.
2nd April 2023
7th May 2023
4th June 2023
2nd July 2023
6th August 2023
3rd September 2023
1st October 2023
The Tower is owned by the Parish of St Clement and is leased by Jersey Heritage, and it is with their kind permission that the JTGA are able to offer you these open days. As such, while entry to the Tower is free of charge, we would very much appreciate a donation to Jersey Heritage as every little helps Jersey Heritage maintain and share these wonderful sites with you.

Learn about the rise and fall of the Jersey stocking knitting industry and of its significance in the Island’s history.

We examine the evidence of the Island’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade, including Jersey’s Lieutenant-Governor Sir George Carteret who was a founder member of the Royal Africa Company that traded in ivory, gold and enslaved people in the 17th century; Captain François Messervy of Jersey who was killed in 1722 during an uprising on board his slave ship off the coast of Africa; and Jersey trader Josué Mauger who in 1752 advertised enslaved people for sale in Nova Scotia, Canada, where his business was based.
This exhibition takes place in the Victorian House at Jersey Museum, with its impressive mahogany staircase, because new research has shown that the house was built partly on the profits of the transatlantic slave trade. ‘Trade Roots’ explores Jersey’s historic links to slavery, from Islanders who owned mahogany plantations overseas and traded in slave-produced goods, to those who campaigned for the abolition of slavery.
Thought-provoking, and at times challenging, this exhibition exposes some uncomfortable new stories from Jersey’s past and examines the legacy and impact of transatlantic slavery on the Island’s community today.
Every Sunday morning one of our qualified guides will take you on a journey through the fascinating history and culture of Jersey.
With their unique insights, our guide will take you on a journey beginning at the end of the last ice-age, some 6,000 years ago when Jersey became an Island. You will learn about the people, see some of the iconic sites of St Helier and hear about the events that have helped shape Jersey’s history, making it the modern, bustling and multicultural island it is today.

STRONGPOINT CORBIERE – La Corbiere headland, St. Brelade’s
Sunday 3rd September 2-5pm
“Lights Out” – Bring a Torch!
An interesting opportunity where you can explore the 5cm M19 mortar bunker, 6-loopholed heavy machine gun turret bunker and connecting tunnel with your own torch! The 10.5cm coastal defence gun casemate will also be open!
This is how the German soldiers manned the Strongpoint during the last winter of the Occupation with little or no electricity for lighting! These bunkers are authentically restored to their original wartime condition and knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to guide you. Displays are based around information given by the soldiers who actually served here! There is also information on the forced labourers who constructed the site and interactions between the soldiers with nearby civilians as well as an escape attempt which ended in failure on the causeway to the lighthouse in September 1944. The sites gives a ‘working atmosphere’ feel and you are allowed to touch and interact with some of the exhibits!
With construction staring in late 1942, Strongpoint Corbiere formed a key part of the defences of St. Ouen’s Bay and also boasted several bunker designs unique to Jersey. The CIOS have currently restored three bunkers within the Strongpoint which will be open and details are below:
5cm M19 AUTOMATIC FORTRESS MORTAR BUNKER AND INTERCONNECTED 6-LOOPHOLED HEAVY MACHINE GUN TURRET BUNKER
The M19 mortar bunker has been restored to a high standard, and thanks to the post war return of its wartime commander, Engelbert Hoppe, tells the story of the crew who actually manned the bunker and what they got up to during the last year of the Occupation. The bunker is uniquely connected to a neighbouring 6-loopholed heavy machine gun turret bunker by an impressive underground corridor. This bunker also served as the Strongpoint’s Command bunker as well as the main hub for both telephone and radio communications.
10.5cm COASTAL DEFENCE GUN CASEMATE “KANONE 2”
Strongpoint Corbiere was unusual for have two ex-French 10.5cm K 331 (f) coastal defence gun casemates, one facing south (designated “Kanone 1” = Cannon 1) which was decimated in the post war scrap drives and the north-facing “Kanone 2”. This bunker, which is hard to access, escaped the post war scrap metal drives and not only retains the original gun but also a wealth of other rare armoured parts. Restored to near operation condition it also tells the story of former crew member Horst Herrmann who manned this casemate from late 1943 and was involved in several live firing exercises of the gun.
Admission £5 – Acompanied under 16s and CIOS members free.

This 20-metre long replica Longhouse was built over two years by volunteers, with oversight from Ancient Technology expert Luke Winter. Since it was officially opened in 2019, volunteers have performed day-to-day maintenance tasks using authentic techniques and tools, and act as guides, demonstrators and interpreters to explain the project to visitors. They are also continually researching, experimenting and training to acquire more Stone Age skills to share, including basket-making and flintknapping.
Every Tuesday, a member of the volunteer team lights a fire in the Longhouse using authentic techniques. This adds warmth to the building but also stops any insect infestation in the traditional straw roof. During your visit, the volunteer will also talk about the traditional methods used and the lessons learned during the build.
If speaking to a Longhouse volunteer is going to be the highlight of your trip to La Hougue Bie, please call +44 (0) 1534 853 823 before you visit to check they are confirmed for that date.

Rose was born in the parish of St Lawrence in 1606 and lived in the Vingtaine du Coin Motier, where Hamptonne House stands, all her life. She serves as housekeeper for Jurat Laurens Hamptonne, who himself witnessed Rose lugging a large poutchie of apples up the hill, and thought her constitution would be fitting to take charge of his household.

In a bid to gather background information for his latest novel, author Charles Condomine invites the delightfully eccentric medium Madame Arcati to stage a seance. Whilst trances, a trembling table and other supernatural manifestations prove entertaining for Charles, his wife Ruth, the sceptical Dr Bradman and the wide-eyed and excitable Mrs Bradman, events take an unexpected and hilarious turn when Charles is faced with the ghost of his first wife, Elvira. He is the only one who can see her and hear her, leading to accusations of hallucinations, alcoholism and insanity. Once Charles manages to prove to Ruth that Elvira’s spirit is present, petty jealousies arise between the two wives followed by a number of mysterious ‘accidents’. Noel Coward’s supernatural comedy never fails to delight with its twists and turns.
Is Charles’ life in danger? Will his wives ever stop bickering with him? Can Madame Arcati save the day? Come along to find out…

Meet Rose Le Brun, the Bouonnefemme at Hamptonne, who will let you in on local secrets and village gossip!
Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday / 10am to 4pm
Meet Rose Le Brun, the Bouonnefemme at Hamptonne, who will let you in on local secrets and village gossip. Rose’s predecessor, Old Maud, had been at Hamptonne for years, but she travelled to St Aubin to see family and never returned. Perhaps the plague got her – they had a lot of it down there.
If meeting the Bouonnefemme is going to be the highlight of your trip to Hamptonne Country Life Museum, please call +44 (0) 1534 863 955 before you visit to check that performances are confirmed for that date.

Our wonderful and creative crochet course is an 8 week guided introduction to Traditional, Tunisian and Amigurumi crochet techniques, suitable for beginners and more advanced.

Meet the Collections gives you the opportunity to see some of the fascinating items in our collections that are not usually on display at one of our sites. With a different theme each month, our collections team will be selecting some of their favourite objects to show you and will be on hand to tell you about these objects, where they came from and what they can tell us about our Island’s history.
In September 1942 over 1,000 people who were not of Jersey birth were deported from the Island to internment camps in Germany. Join us at the Sir Francis Cook Gallery where we will be showing some of the objects, art works, diaries, letters and photographs that were created by the deportees and tell us the story of their experiences.
Tours of our social history store will also run at 10am and 11am giving you an opportunity to see many more of the objects in our collection connected to the Second World War.
Just over 20 stallholders will be selling their own uniquely made items, both inside and outside Trinity Parish Hall, including artworks (beach, fluid, local sand and resin works), crocheted and knitted items, scrunchies, textile crafts, local sand coasters, wax melts, candles, diffusers, room mist sprays, soaps, lotions, essential oils, bath bombs, ceramics, seaglass jewellery, cards, badges, rosettes, posters, key rings, cakes, biscuits, jams and chutneys.
There will also be stalls selling plants, shrubs and seedlings, preloved books, farm produce and eggs. As well as refreshments, supplied by Maria of Love Cake inside the parish hall, outside the hall people will be able to buy candyfloss. Plenty for all of the family with no entry fee.
P.S. Please keep Saturday 18th November free for our indoor Winter Market!
Enjoy a day of good food, live music, local crafts, farmyard animals, fresh produce and fairground games. A fun day out for all ages.

The Kindness Festival returns on Saturday 9th September.
Once again St Aubin will be alive with the sound of music as 30 charities fill the Harbourside and Parish Hall.
It is called the Kindness Festival for two reasons. First, it is a joyful celebration of wonderful local charities demonstrating the kindness and caring that makes life in Jersey better for everyone. Second, every Charity shows Kindness by contributing an activity that makes the day fun for all the visitors to the Festival.Established in 2015, the Kindness Festival has a unique atmosphere, uplifting and joyful, and very effective in enabling 30 charities to show, share, tell and celebrate the work they do in the community, helping and supporting individuals. It is a celebration of the Kindness that makes a difference. And this year the Festival entertainment is as good as ever, a great line-up of musicians doing 40-minute sets from 10am onwards.

Great Music all day at the Kindness Festival
At every stand, in addition to the essential message of each Charity there is an interesting activity – Where else could you walk though a giant inflated Colon and then pat a Therapy Dog, see a model of the SS Vega, whilst eating a cupcake and have your face painted in neon colours, have your hand massaged, make a bird feeder, purchase hand made needle and art works, a collectable hedgehog, painted Kindness pebble, and relax with Reflexology, muscle stimulation, and an Indian head massage, shoot a Nerf gun, win prizes in quizzes, eat a Fairtrade product and drink a cup of tea, and more! This is the essence of the Kindness Festival; every participant contributes an activity that contributes to the joy of the day.Harbourside St Aubin is a wonderful location making the Festival ideal for a day out, to enjoy all that the Festival and the village has to offer. With the Promenade connection from St Helier, and parking along St Aubin’s Bay, past Festival visitors have taken advantage of a car free visit, walking along the Esplanade, bicycling, riding on Le Petit Train or strolling across the beach to enjoy the carefree ambiance that is the Kindness experience and discover more than you ever knew goes on in Jersey! The Festival runs from 10am to 4pm.
About the Kindness Festival
The first Kindness Festival was created by Brian Clarke in 2015 and he has single handedly organised every Festival since then.
The concept of the festival is based on Brian’s belief that Kindness is the catalyst that enables society to change for the better. Kindness facilitates empathy, tolerance, compassion, and social responsibility when we have a basis of kindness. Kindness is demonstrated by the 400 locally registered charities, and their volunteers who do so much to improve the quality of Island life, and the purpose of the Festival is to give them a forum to show and tell of their work.

With over 20 stalls in the Yurt village and a programme of events and activities throughout the day, the SCOOP Summer Market will be celebrating the harvest season and an island full of creative makers and producers.

Foolish Things

Our wonderful and creative crochet course is an 8 week guided introduction to Traditional, Tunisian and Amigurumi crochet techniques, suitable for beginners and more advanced.

If meeting the Bouonnefemme is going to be the highlight of your trip to Hamptonne Country Life Museum, please call +44 (0) 1534 863 955 before you visit to check that performances are confirmed for that date.

‘Attack on the Sorpe Dam’ is based on a true story, part of Operation Chastise – the Dambusters Raid. It is set within the context of the RAF bomber offensive on Germany, during WW2. The story features a first-hand account from the perspective of the late Squadron Leader George “Johnny” Johnson, a young 21 year old 617 Squadron Bomb Aimer.
The film follows the story of Johnny and his aircrew from March 1943, on joining a newly formed squadron, for a top secret, special operation that has the potential to shorten the war in Europe. Johnny describes the dangerous low flying training and events leading up to the operational briefing on the 16th May 1943. Johnny and his crew finally discover what they are expected to do and are presented with what seems like an impossible task. They are to fly at 100 feet in a four engine Lancaster bomber at night, over many miles of occupied enemy territory. On reaching the target, they need to drop a new weapon that has never before been tried operationally, with pin-point accuracy, in a way they had not practiced and then make their way back home safely. Nothing like this had ever been attempted…
Guests will be invited to enjoy a buffet and refreshments prior to the screening of the film.
This is an exclusive private screening and the first opportunity to see the film in Jersey. The film was designed to be shown as part of a live public presentation and will not be available on DVD or streaming services.
Originally produced and directed on Broadway by Harold Prince
Orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick
On the night of his 35th birthday, confirmed bachelor Robert contemplates his unmarried state. Over the course of a series of dinners, drinks and even a wedding, his friends explain the pros and cons of taking on a partner/spouse. The habitually single Robert is forced to question his adamant retention of bachelorhood during a hilarious array of interactions.
Company features a brilliantly brisk and energetic score containing many of Stephen Sondheim’s best-known songs. The strength of the piece lies in its vivid yet real characters. Every audience member will see reflections of themselves in at least one of the characters onstage.
This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International
All authorised performance materials are also supplied by MTI

Meet Rose Le Brun, the Bouonnefemme at Hamptonne, who will let you in on local secrets and village gossip!
Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday / 10am to 4pm
Meet Rose Le Brun, the Bouonnefemme at Hamptonne, who will let you in on local secrets and village gossip. Rose’s predecessor, Old Maud, had been at Hamptonne for years, but she travelled to St Aubin to see family and never returned. Perhaps the plague got her – they had a lot of it down there.
If meeting the Bouonnefemme is going to be the highlight of your trip to Hamptonne Country Life Museum, please call +44 (0) 1534 863 955 before you visit to check that performances are confirmed for that date.
Meet our Castle storyteller who can answer all your Jersey questions.
Wednesday / 10.30am to 12.30pm

If meeting the Storyteller is going to be the highlight of your trip to Mont Orgueil Castle, please call +44 (0)1534 853 292 before you visit to check that performances are confirmed for that date.

Very little on the small island of Jersey can rival the variety, spectacle and energy of the International Air Display.
The Airshow has established itself over the years as one of the islands premier calendar dates; a midweek show where all the islands children are given the day off school. Markets close for the afternoon and all eyes look to the skies.
The sweeping vista of St. Aubin’s Bay forms a natural amphitheatre where visitors and locals alike congregate to watch these magnificent aircraft from across the ages. During this free 4 hour flying display you get to see fast jets, vintage warbirds, classic aircraft and even some local talent!
The large tidal range, and sheltered waters of the bay also provide the opportunity to mix flying and boating. From the single engine De Havilland Beaver Float Plane to the impressive Dornier DO24 Flying Boat, the bay itself has seen its fair share of ‘touch and goes’ over the years.
The 2023 Jersey International Air Display will take place on Thursday 14th September between 13:00 to 17:00.
