It is 1797 and Islander Mary Le Brun is visiting La Hougue Bie. As the sounds of her violin cascade down the mound, join Mary and be transported back to a time of intrigue and mystery at the ancient site.

Close your eyes and imagine the grand, gothic folly of the Prince’s Tower perched high on the mound, a remarkable structure that stirs curiosity. Its creation, spearheaded by the enigmatic Captain D’Auvergne, is shrouded in rumours, leaving many to wonder about his true intentions.
Mary will lead you on a journey into the past, revealing not just the facts of the Tower’s creation, but also the colourful, speculative stories about its builder, Captain D’Auvergne. Join the intrigue swirling around this fascinating structure.

Enter the Labourer’s Cottage at Hamptonne in the year 1880 and meet Astra the Bonnet Maker, a skilled artisan who brings the craft of Jersey bonnet-making to life.

As you watch her work, witness the intricate craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations, preserving a traditional skill that was once essential to daily life in Jersey.

The Jersey Bonnet is more than just a piece of headwear; it’s a symbol of tradition, practicality and style. Made to protect the wearer from the elements, it was a vital part of the Jersey woman’s wardrobe during the late 19th century. Astra’s demonstration highlights the detailed process involved in constructing these bonnets, from selecting the right fabric to shaping the structure and sewing each piece together with precision.

She also shares the fascinating history behind the Jersey Bonnet’s design, explaining how different patterns evolved over time based on the needs of the Island’s women and their family heritage.

With his loyal hawk by his side, Jean will guide you through the intricate and historic skills required for a successful hunt, offering a glimpse into the time when falconry was not just a sport, but a vital part of life for the elite.

Jean will demonstrate the training techniques used to prepare a hawk for work. Learn about the patience, precision, and knowledge required to train the bird and ensure it followed commands and performed well during a hunt. The process involved trust building and an understanding of the bird’s natural instincts.

This immersive experience offers an unforgettable opportunity to explore a world where the hawk was not only a hunting companion but a symbol of status and power within the Tudor court.

Perennial favourites Oddsocks Productions return with their twist on a Shakespearean classic, and the ever-popular Coronation Park Concert Series is back for its 5th year! Jersey is a special Island. It is tiny – a small dot on the world map. But its size belies the breadth of its unique and varied heritage. This NEW free exhibition explores what makes us Jersey.

The Island has been a home, a haven, a paradise, a battleground, a prison. It has been a place of dreams and disasters, of connection and isolation, of vulnerability and strength, of unique creatures and ancient landscapes, of pioneers and tradition.

Over the course of hundreds of thousands of years, four million people have been part of its history.

This exhibition celebrates some of our Island’s most significant moments and discovers how living here has affected the lives of just a few of those four million. Using our most special objects as witnesses to our past, it explores how we have come to be an Island and Islanders.

Prehistoric mammoth skulls and dwarf red deer bones tell the story of becoming an island; gold torques and ancient coin hoards explore the theme of Jersey as a sacred island; royal charters describe the Island as separate and different. During the Battle of Jersey and the Occupation, the Island was a place of conflict. At other times, Jersey was a place of refuge. Islands are also a little bit exotic and Jersey has attracted artists, honeymooners and holidaymakers. In this new exhibition, discover stories of our Island and explore what it means to be Jersey.

The Link Gallery is a small gallery at Jersey Museum where every month a local artist displays their work. Each month the exhibition changes, creating a year of local artwork covering a wide-range of topics, medias and artistic styles. We also invite local artistic groups, schools or arts organisations to use the Link Gallery.

The Link Gallery is on the ground floor of Jersey Museum and is free to access.

Meet Rose Le Brun, the Bouonnefemme at Hamptonne, who will let you in on local secrets and village gossip

In the kitchen of Hamptonne House you’ll find Rose Le Brun, the Bouonnefemme (housekeeper) to Jurat Laurens Hamptonne, and she will take you on a journey back to the 17th century.

Rose was born in the parish of St Lawrence in 1606, has lived in the area her entire life and knows its stories. As the Bouonnefemme, she is not just a housekeeper, she is a vital part of the community, and she knows all the local secrets and village gossip.

Her sharp eye and eager ear make her the perfect source of all the news that circulates through the parish. Rose is also happy to share her wealth of knowledge about the history of the place. Whether it is the rural traditions, medicines or the food, her stories offer a unique and engaging perspective on the day-to-day realities of life in the 1600s.

When we come together, we spark new ideas, inspire each other and make amazing things happen.

Marie Esnouf’s story is a fascinating yet chilling chapter in the history of Jersey.

In this dramatic reimagining, you encounter her in 1648 while she was imprisoned at Mont Orgueil Castle, accused of witchcraft and awaiting trial.
As a rector’s granddaughter, one might expect Marie to be above suspicion. However, during the tumultuous period of the 17th century, when fear and superstition ran high, her fate was sealed when parishioners accused her of practicing witchcraft.

In a time when unexplained events or illness could be blamed on witchcraft, even someone with family connections like Marie wasn’t immune. While many of the trials mention criminal behaviour, we now think that people could have been accused of witchcraft for other reasons: for being different, for knowledge of herbs, or for simply not conforming to societal expectations.

Hear Marie’s tale, similar to that of many other accused women and men. The shadows of the Castle’s walls serve as the perfect backdrop for this story in which the scales of justice are not necessarily balanced.

More than just art, ‘Connection’ is a tribute to Jersey’s rich history, woven together through an unexpected medium – JT phone cards.

This artwork is a testament to the power of creativity. Bedding, a wheelchair user, brings a unique vision to ‘Connection’, showing how art can inspire, transcend boundaries, and offer space for imagination and self-expression. Inspired by childhood memories of collecting phone cards, Bedding and de la Haye transformed them into a spectacular visual tapestry of Jersey’s landscape, culture and traditions.

Over 900 hours of dedication turned this piece into a celebration of connection – between past and present, history and home, people and place. From ancient Neolithic sites and iconic modern landmarks like the Millennium Stones, to displays by the Red Arrows, every detail reflects the ties that bind us.

Come and explore this unique work, discover the memories within it, and reflect on your own connections to Jersey, its history and its people.

To mark the 80th anniversary of Liberation, immerse yourself in this captivating ten-minute projected film, ‘A Day to Remember’. As the magnificent events unfold, we hear from Islanders who witnessed them, as well as evacuees in England and deportees in Germany.

Drawing upon archive film and an immense library of stills, we experience the anticipation of freedom, the final surrender on 9 May 1945 and the arrival of Force 135, set to clear away the aftermath of war and make the Island safe again.

Released from captivity, Islanders explore their homeland afresh and begin the journey of recovery. Civilians and servicemen return with news of those who would never come home. Finally, we hear of the gratitude felt by descendants of Occupation veterans for the freedom that was gained all those years ago and the life that it has given them.

The surprising story of how Hamptonne and other Jersey farms almost collapsed during the Occupation, and how they thrived following Liberation in May 1945

This short exhibition tells the Occupation story of Hamptonne and examines how farming recovered after Liberation. As Jersey’s major industry before and after the Second World War, it was seen as vital that farming should prosper following the Occupation. By May 1945, Islanders were concerned that the unique Jersey breed of cattle was under threat due to looting and food shortages, and many felt the decimated farms would never get back to pre-war production. They could not have been more wrong. Learn the surprising story of how farms survived the Occupation and thrived following Liberation.

St Catherine’s Bunker is a remarkable World War Two German fortification and tunnel complex that stands as a testament to the German forces’ hold on the British Channel Islands during the Second World War. Strategically positioned, it formed a crucial part of the German northeastern defences, especially after the Allied invasion of France. This tour provides a guided walk around the Bunker and Tunnels the German forces built during the Second World War.

This tour allows hands-on interaction with numerous World War Two artefacts, weapons, and equipment, a truly unique experience. Our tour perfectly complements understanding the history of the D-Day invasion and the battle of Normandy, which unfolded less than 15 miles away.

Meet the Victorian Blacksmith at Hamptonne and watch him as he stokes the portable forge to get it to the right temperature for working the iron or steel, then hammers the metal as he shapes a new tool or implement or repairs an old one.

In the 19th century, the blacksmith was a key figure in the local community. This skilled and highly valued craftsman was central to the daily life of the Island, providing vital services to both urban and rural areas, and involving them in the local economy and trade.

Blacksmiths were not just workers, but also important figures in the community. They often provided social hubs, where local people could exchange news or ideas while waiting for their tools to be repaired or made. In the Channel Islands, especially Jersey, there was a strong connection between blacksmiths and local industries. Whether it was the fishing, agricultural, or shipping industries, blacksmiths were essential to keeping equipment and transport functioning. Their knowledge of metalworking was passed down through the generations.

Winter, with his cheeky humour and sly wit, finds a way to survive. The Castle’s vast halls and hidden corners are like a maze. From the shadowy alcoves to the narrow staircases, he knows where to hide when his Master’s men come looking.

He also knows the Castle’s stories – tales of past mischief, hidden treasures and ghostly whispers. He sneaks around the corridors looking for anyone willing to listen to the strange happenings that supposedly occurred within the Castle’s walls. Explore a magical landscape where Jersey’s geological map becomes a rainbow of colour and the human landscape is a glorious reminder of our proximity to the French mainland.

Join Geopark Guide Jean Treleven to explore the beauty of Anneport’s explosive volcanic rocks including Jersey’s answer to the Giant’s Causeway. See the towers built to defend the Island against a French enemy and the sites that provided a refuge for French exiles during the turbulent period of their Revolution and Napoleonic wars. Learn about the Neanderthal people who hunted in an ice age landscape ‘behind Gorey castle’ and the Neolithic farmers who built La Pouquelaye de Faldouet and lived in a landscape that included much of the Royal Bay of Grouville.

This geowalk starts outside the Jersey Accommodation and Activity Centre, Rue de la Pouclee et des Quatres Chemins.

It’s 1865 and Francoise Nicolle, her husband, mother and children live at Hamptonne Farm as tenant farmers

Born in the parish of St Mary and into a life of farm labour, Francoise is no stranger to the demanding nature of rural life. But with many children to care for, a husband struggling with poor health, and the ongoing pressures of farm life, her resilience is put to the test each day.

Francoise’s family, like many tenant farmers of the time, face a constant struggle to balance the demands of the land and family to keep up with the payments to their landlord. In addition to the physical labour of the farm, she must care for her family and oversee the children’s education. When they are not out in the fields helping with the harvest or planting, she does her best to teach them their letters and numbers.

Francoise will share the hardships and rewards of living on a Jersey farm in the Victorian era. Her stories illustrate the resilience, hard work and community that defined life in 19th century rural Jersey.

his 20-metre long replica Longhouse was built over two years by volunteers, with oversight from Ancient Technology expert Luke Winter. Since it was officially opened in 2019, volunteers have performed day-to-day maintenance tasks using authentic techniques and tools, and act as guides, demonstrators and interpreters to explain the project to visitors. They are also continually researching, experimenting and training to acquire more Stone Age skills to share, including basket-making and flintknapping.

Every Tuesday, a member of the volunteer team lights a fire in the Longhouse using authentic techniques. This adds warmth to the building but also stops any insect infestation in the traditional straw roof. During your visit, the volunteer will also talk about the traditional methods used and the lessons learned during the build.

With his handsome looks, undeniable charm and impeccable sense of fashion, he captured the attention of Queen Elizabeth I and the nobility of England, earning a reputation as something of a “peacock”.

Hear firsthand accounts of his incredible adventures at sea, from his voyages to the Americas in search of new lands to his role in the establishment of English colonies. Summer wouldn’t be the same without Oddsocks!

The ever-popular theatre company return with another high-energy, feel-good, family show.

This year, Shakespeare’s magical, fast-paced, hilarious comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, will be performed in Oddsocks’ inimitable, irreverent style – with live music, comedy action and some outrageous hunting dogs!

Four lovers run off to the Athenian forest where mysterious woodland creatures play tricks on them with hilarious results and when a troupe of amateur actors decide to rehearse in a glade, the fairies intervention leads to bizarre and outrageous comedy. Don’t miss out! Catch the Dream!

From Monday 28 July to Sunday 17 August, Jersey Arts Centre’s summer programme moves to Coronation Park for a season of al-fresco shows and concerts. Perennial favourites Oddsocks Productions return with their twist on a Shakespearean classic, and the ever-popular Coronation Park Concert Series is back for its 5th year! We look forward to seeing you at the park – here are a few things you need to know:

• The concerts and park events often sell-out: be sure to book early!
• You are welcome to picnic.
• Seating is provided, although you may wish to bring your own picnic blankets or chairs.
• Please arrive by bike, on foot, by public transport (Bus 12a or 15), or park your car
with plenty of time to spare as Millbrook playing field is no longer available!
• Please dress suitably as performances will go ahead whatever the weather.
• Refunds will only be offered if a performance / concert is cancelled.
