Celebrate 100 years of surfing in Jersey, from the first beach huts and wooden boards of the 1920s to the international surfing competitions of the 1960s. Discover how the sport has developed over the past century and how Jersey has led the way in innovative surfboard designs, from the earliest boards of solid teak to the latest in sustainable surfboards made of seaweed!

Then, visit the Surfing Cinema for three documentary films, taken from the archives, that explore the history of surfing in Jersey, featuring interviews with the people who shaped the Island’s surfing scene.

Mont Orgueil’s ancient links with the Crown make it the perfect site to explore the history of the charters granted to the Island from Edward III onwards

Our ‘Jersey Royal Charters’ banner exhibition is in residence in the Undercroft at Mont Orgueil.

Many of the Royal Charters before Elizabeth I’s reign mention the Castle with its military and strategic importance to the English monarch.

Elizabeth I, of course, favoured the new castle named for her in St Aubin’s Bay (Elizabeth Castle). Following her reign, mention of Mont Orgueil ceased, although the charters continued to reinforce Jersey’s special relationship with the Crown.

There were ten Jersey passengers and crew members on board the RMS Titanic when it left Southampton on 10 April 1912

Five days later, the “unsinkable” ship would lie at the bottom of the ocean having struck an iceberg. The loss of life was around 1,500 passengers and crew, making it one of the deadliest peacetime sinkings of a single ship.

Jersey passengers were travelling in First and Second Class; Lady Duff-Gordon, the celebrated fashion designer; Rosalie Bidois, personal maid to the wealthy American Astor family; and young Bertha Ilett, travelling on her own, all survived to testify to the events of that night. The fates of the Jersey crew members were far more precarious.

Who you were, which class you belonged to, and the lottery of that night in April 1912 when some people were saved and others perished, is unbearably tragic. This new gallery within the Maritime Museum honours and remembers the Islanders involved.

Over the course of hundreds of thousands of years, four million people have been part of its history.

This exhibition celebrates some of our Island’s most significant moments and discovers how living here has affected the lives of just a few of those four million. Using our most special objects as witnesses to our past, it explores how we have come to be an Island and Islanders.

Prehistoric mammoth skulls and dwarf red deer bones tell the story of becoming an island; gold torques and ancient coin hoards explore the theme of Jersey as a sacred island; royal charters describe the Island as separate and different. During the Battle of Jersey and the Occupation, the Island was a place of conflict. At other times, Jersey was a place of refuge. Islands are also a little bit exotic and Jersey has attracted artists, honeymooners and holidaymakers. In this new exhibition, discover stories of our Island and explore what it means to be Jersey.

The Link Gallery is a small gallery at Jersey Museum where every month a local artist displays their work. Each month the exhibition changes, creating a year of local artwork covering a wide-range of topics, medias and artistic styles. We also invite local artistic groups, schools or arts organisations to use the Link Gallery.

Set in the historic farmstead of Hamptonne, surrounded by chickens, pigs, sheep and cows, this new exhibition tells the story of Jersey’s traditional farming methods through the lens of the food the Island produces today.

Discover how Jersey farmers and food producers are drawing on generations of local knowledge and traditional farming practices to create a sustainable farming model for the future. The Island has been a home, a haven, a paradise, a battleground, a prison. It has been a place of dreams and disasters, of connection and isolation, of vulnerability and strength, of unique creatures and ancient landscapes, of pioneers and tradition.

Over the course of hundreds of thousands of years, four million people have been part of its history.

This exhibition celebrates some of our Island’s most significant moments and discovers how living here has affected the lives of just a few of those four million. Using our most special objects as witnesses to our past, it explores how we have come to be an Island and Islanders.

Prehistoric mammoth skulls and dwarf red deer bones tell the story of becoming an island; gold torques and ancient coin hoards explore the theme of Jersey as a sacred island; royal charters describe the Island as separate and different. During the Battle of Jersey and the Occupation, the Island was a place of conflict. At other times, Jersey was a place of refuge. Islands are also a little bit exotic and Jersey has attracted artists, honeymooners and holidaymakers. In this new exhibition, discover stories of our Island and explore what it means to be Jersey.

The Link Gallery is a small gallery at Jersey Museum where every month a local artist displays their work. Each month the exhibition changes, creating a year of local artwork covering a wide-range of topics, medias and artistic styles. We also invite local artistic groups, schools or arts organisations to use the Link Gallery.

Jersey has a rich heritage of farming and food, from the breeding of our famous Jersey cow to the growing of Jersey Royal potatoes.

Set in the historic farmstead of Hamptonne, surrounded by chickens, pigs, sheep and cows, this new exhibition tells the story of Jersey’s traditional farming methods through the lens of the food the Island produces today.

Discover how Jersey farmers and food producers are drawing on generations of local knowledge and traditional farming practices to create a sustainable farming model for the future. This thought-provoking new exhibition will encourage visitors to engage with the countryside and think about seasonal and sustainable food production in Jersey.

Inspired by the exceptional properties of the light in Jersey, which have made it home to artists over the centuries, this exhibition is a rare chance to view works from the Jersey Heritage collection that see the light in different ways.

This new FREE exhibition examines how Jersey artists have treated light as a subject in their work. The clarity of light in Jersey – the sunniest place in the British Isles – has long been recognised by visiting and local artists as a unique and attractive feature of the Island. The exhibition examines artists’ responses to Jersey’s natural light through the lens of light as a subject, as a contemplation and as a tool to market a vision of Jersey. Visitors will have the opportunity to see artworks from the Jersey Heritage collection that have not been on display for a number of years.

Celebrate 100 years of surfing in Jersey, from the first beach huts and wooden boards of the 1920s to the international surfing competitions of the 1960s. Discover how the sport has developed over the past century and how Jersey has led the way in innovative surfboard designs, from the earliest boards of solid teak to the latest in sustainable surfboards made of seaweed!

Then, visit the Surfing Cinema for three documentary films, taken from the archives, that explore the history of surfing in Jersey, featuring interviews with the people who shaped the Island’s surfing scene.

Mont Orgueil’s ancient links with the Crown make it the perfect site to explore the history of the charters granted to the Island from Edward III onwards

Our ‘Jersey Royal Charters’ banner exhibition is in residence in the Undercroft at Mont Orgueil.

Many of the Royal Charters before Elizabeth I’s reign mention the Castle with its military and strategic importance to the English monarch.

Elizabeth I, of course, favoured the new castle named for her in St Aubin’s Bay (Elizabeth Castle). Following her reign, mention of Mont Orgueil ceased, although the charters continued to reinforce Jersey’s special relationship with the Crown.
