The world’s largest Celtic hoard was discovered in Jersey, this exhibition explores why people might have buried it there.

In 2012 the world’s largest Celtic hoard was discovered buried in a field in Jersey. This exhibition explores what might have led people to bury a hoard of 70,000 coins and jewellery in Jersey, 2000 years ago and looks closely at some of the items found within the hoard.

Explore the time when Roman armies marched through Europe, 2000 years ago, they left behind them a trail of death and destruction which almost wiped out the culture and civilization of the Celtic people who lived there. Using scientific and archaeological research we can learn more about the people that buried the hoard, about their lives and customs. Ground-breaking research can tell us more about the moment and the place the hoard was buried. It might even challenge some long-held ideas about why hoards were buried.

The Link Gallery is a small gallery at Jersey Museum where every month a local artist displays their work. Each month the exhibition changes, creating a year of local artwork covering a wide-range of topics, medias and artistic styles. We also invite local artistic groups, schools or arts organisations to use the Link Gallery.

In the kitchen of Hamptonne House, you’ll find Rose Le Brun, the Bouonnefemme (housekeeper) to Jurat Laurens Hamptonne. She will take you on a journey back to the 17th century.

Rose was born in the parish of St Lawrence in 1606. She has lived in the area her entire life and knows its stories. As the Bouonnefemme, she is not just a housekeeper, she is a vital part of the community and she knows all the local secrets and village gossip. Her sharp eye and eager ear make her the perfect source of all the news that circulates through the parish.

Rose is more than happy to share with you her wealth of knowledge about the history of the place. Whether it’s the rural traditions, medicines or the food, Rose’s stories offer a unique perspective on the day-to-day realities of life in the 1600s.
She’ll tell you about the everyday realities of running the house, share the local gossip and recount the mysteries of the past, bringing to life the history of Hamptonne.

Rose is not just a housekeeper; she is a keeper of the stories that have shaped the Island’s past and its people.

Walk into the Parade Ground at Elizabeth Castle and you could find yourself standing to attention under the watchful eye of the Master Gunner.

His sharp gaze ensures that posture is impeccable, backs are straight, chins are high, and bellies are tucked in, ready for the lunchtime parade.
With his deep knowledge of the Castle’s rich history, the Master Gunner shares stories and mysteries stretching back through the centuries, from the reign of Queen Elizabeth I when the Castle played a pivotal role in defending Jersey from potential threats to the Battle of Jersey in 1781 when the Island’s militia fought off a French invasion.

After hearing about the Castle’s history, experience the resounding bang of a signal gun and, later in the day, the flintlock musket. The Master Gunner demonstrates the power of these formidable weapons, providing a glimpse into the military practices of the past. The sound of the gunshot echoes across the Parade Ground and is not for the faint-hearted!

The Master Gunner’s parade offers a truly immersive experience, combining military discipline with storytelling, historical exploration and a demonstration of the weaponry that once protected this strategic fortress. Standing in formation, listening to the Master Gunner’s tales and preparing for the thunderous sounds of the artillery, feel history come alive around you, and appreciate the Castle’s vital place in the defense of Jersey.

Our ‘Jersey Royal Charters’ banner exhibition is in residence in the Undercroft at Mont Orgueil.

Many of the Royal Charters before Elizabeth I’s reign mention the Castle with its military and strategic importance to the English monarch.

Elizabeth I, of course, favoured the new castle named for her in St Aubin’s Bay (Elizabeth Castle). Following her reign, mention of Mont Orgueil ceased, although the charters continued to reinforce Jersey’s special relationship with the Crown.

This exhibition examines the many challenges Jersey faced following its release from five long years of German Occupation. After the celebrations are over, how do you manage the transition from military rule to civilian administration? How do you unite a population divided by loss, separation, and suspicions of collaboration? And how do you return the Island to prosperity after five years of economic isolation and mounting war debts?

The exhibition explores the years following Liberation, both the challenges, joys and opportunities, and traces the Island’s long road to recovery. It also considers how we have remembered Liberation as the years have passed and asks what we can learn from this experience.

The story Beryl will share with you is a testament to the resilience, ingenuity and determination of Jersey’s people during the German Occupation.

Meet Beryl and hear about life in rural Jersey during the Occupation years of the Second World War.

In 1943, Hamptonne was partially requisitioned by German troops. The Pinel family remained as tenant farmers, playing a vital role in maintaining food supplies for the Jersey community, and the German troops.

Beryl embodied resourcefulness and determination. Her unwavering resilience ensured that despite the hardships, her family and others reliant on Hamptonne continued to receive vital sustenance. With imported goods scarce and rationing a constant strain, farmers like the Pinels had to adapt to an environment where every crop, every egg and every piece of livestock carried heightened importance.

Farming under Occupation was no small feat. The German forces imposed strict controls, which included the requisition of livestock, equipment and harvested crops. Farmers were required to record and report their yields, often surrendering much of their produce to the occupying authorities. These controls made it immensely difficult to provide for their families, let alone support the wider community. Yet Beryl found ways to sustain morale and maintain a sense of hope among those around her. Working tirelessly from dawn to dusk, she carefully managed what little resources they had, innovating where she could.

Beryl’s ability to adapt and persevere during these dark times underscores the essential role of farmers in preserving not only food supplies, but also the spirit of the Island.

Join Betsy in the Military Hospital kitchen to discover more about life in the Victorian era at Elizabeth Castle.

Betsy was born in the wind, salt and stone of Normandy, in a small coastal town not unlike Jersey. She grew up in a household where food mattered, not for luxury but for survival. Her mother cooked for fishermen and seasonal labourers, and Betsy learned early how to stretch rations and use every scrap to keep men fed when money was short.

Political unrest, poor harvests and the promise of steadier work drew her across the water to Jersey while she was still young. The crossing was short but the change was great – a new language, new rules and dealing with a deep suspicion of anyone “from France”.

However, Jersey suited Betsy more than she expected. The Island felt familiar with the sea, the unpredictable weather and the cautious but resilient people. She first found work in private kitchens and then was recommended for a position at Elizabeth Castle, where civilian cooks were often preferred for hospital work.

Albert was born into a working-class family in England, where prospects at home were limited and military service promised regular pay, meals and purpose. As a young man, he enlisted in the Royal Artillery, a branch of the Army that valued discipline, strength and technical skill.

He learned gunnery the hard way: lifting shot, swabbing barrels and standing watch in all weathers. Artillery service was physically demanding and unforgiving, but it offered pride and a sense of belonging.

Albert’s condition developed gradually rather than through a single dramatic wound. Years of exposure to cold stone, wet clothing and immobility during long watches caused chronic pain and weakness in his leg, possibly rheumatism, joint damage or nerve injury. Eventually, he became unfit for full duty.

Rather than discharge him immediately, the Army classified him as an invalid – a soldier still under orders but no longer combat-ready – and he was transferred to Elizabeth Castle. As an invalid gunner, Albert lives in a limbo between service and civilian life. He is expected to:
•Assist with light duties
•Clean equipment and quarters
•Carry messages within the garrison
•Help watch over other sick or injured men.

Sit and chat with him in the Military Hospital at the Castle. Though physically limited, you’ll discover that he remains mentally sharp and deeply loyal.

his 20-metre long replica Longhouse was built over two years by volunteers, with oversight from Ancient Technology expert Luke Winter. Since it was officially opened in 2019, volunteers have performed day-to-day maintenance tasks using authentic techniques and tools, and act as guides, demonstrators and interpreters to explain the project to visitors. They are also continually researching, experimenting and training to acquire more Stone Age skills to share, including basket-making and flintknapping.

Every Tuesday, a member of the volunteer team lights a fire in the Longhouse using authentic techniques. This adds warmth to the building but also stops any insect infestation in the traditional straw roof. During your visit, the volunteer will also talk about the traditional methods used and the lessons learned during the build.

Featuring real people living with dementia, it captures strength, diversity, joy, skills, love, support, and optimism among its subjects.  It celebrates them as real people, not solely defined by their diagnosis.

By shifting the narrative from one of despair to possibility, we can better appreciate the capabilities and potential of people living with dementia. We can give hope to those with a recent diagnosis, reducing stigma and promoting a more inclusive and supportive society in the process.

The Island has been a home, a haven, a paradise, a battleground, a prison. It has been a place of dreams and disasters, of connection and isolation, of vulnerability and strength, of unique creatures and ancient landscapes, of pioneers and tradition.

Over the course of hundreds of thousands of years, four million people have been part of its history.

This exhibition celebrates some of our Island’s most significant moments and discovers how living here has affected the lives of just a few of those four million. Using our most special objects as witnesses to our past, it explores how we have come to be an Island and Islanders.

Prehistoric mammoth skulls and dwarf red deer bones tell the story of becoming an island; gold torques and ancient coin hoards explore the theme of Jersey as a sacred island; royal charters describe the Island as separate and different. During the Battle of Jersey and the Occupation, the Island was a place of conflict. At other times, Jersey was a place of refuge. Islands are also a little bit exotic and Jersey has attracted artists, honeymooners and holidaymakers. In this new exhibition, discover stories of our Island and explore what it means to be Jersey.

With his loyal hawk by his side, Jean will guide you through the intricate and historic skills required for a successful hunt, offering a glimpse into a time when falconry was not just a sport but a vital part of life for the elite.

He will demonstrate the training techniques used to prepare a hawk for work. Learn about the patience, precision and knowledge required to train the bird, ensuring it follows commands and performs well during a hunt. The process of training a hawk involved both building trust and an understanding of the bird’s natural instincts. Jean explains how he uses rewards and communication to establish a successful working relationship with his bird.

Through Francoise’s eyes, understand the hardships and rewards of living on a Jersey farm in the Victorian era.

The year is 1865 at Hamptonne Farm, where Francoise Nicolle and her family work as tenant farmers.

Francoise was born in the parish of St Mary and into a life of farm labour. She is no stranger to the demanding nature of rural life but with many children to care for, a husband struggling with poor health and the ongoing pressures of farm life, her resilience is put to the test every day.

Francoise’s family, like many tenant farmers of the time, face a constant struggle to balance the demands of the land and family to keep up with the payments to their landlord.

In addition to the physical labour of the farm, Francoise must care for the family and oversee the children’s education. When they are not out in the fields helping with the harvest or planting, she does her best to teach them their letters and numbers, though the task is difficult given the demands of everyday life.

Through Francoise’s eyes, understand the hardships and rewards of living on a Jersey farm in the Victorian era. Her stories illustrate the resilience, hard work and community that defined life in rural Jersey and you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices that shaped the Island’s history and the families who worked to make it thrive.

Since it was officially opened in 2019, volunteers have performed day-to-day maintenance tasks using authentic techniques and tools, and act as guides, demonstrators and interpreters to explain the project to visitors. They are also continually researching, experimenting and training to acquire more Stone Age skills to share, including basket-making and flintknapping.

Every Tuesday, a member of the volunteer team lights a fire in the Longhouse using authentic techniques. This adds warmth to the building but also stops any insect infestation in the traditional straw roof. During your visit, the volunteer will also talk about the traditional methods used and the lessons learned during the build.

Our ‘Jersey Royal Charters’ banner exhibition is in residence in the Undercroft at Mont Orgueil.

Many of the Royal Charters before Elizabeth I’s reign mention the Castle with its military and strategic importance to the English monarch.

Elizabeth I, of course, favoured the new castle named for her in St Aubin’s Bay (Elizabeth Castle). Following her reign, mention of Mont Orgueil ceased, although the charters continued to reinforce Jersey’s special relationship with the Crown.

As the Bouonnefemme, she is not just a housekeeper, she is a vital part of the community and she knows all the local secrets and village gossip. His sharp gaze ensures that posture is impeccable, backs are straight, chins are high, and bellies are tucked in, ready for the lunchtime parade.
With his deep knowledge of the Castle’s rich history, the Master Gunner shares stories and mysteries stretching back through the centuries, from the reign of Queen Elizabeth I when the Castle played a pivotal role in defending Jersey from potential threats to the Battle of Jersey in 1781 when the Island’s militia fought off a French invasion.

After hearing about the Castle’s history, experience the resounding bang of a signal gun and, later in the day, the flintlock musket. The Master Gunner demonstrates the power of these formidable weapons, providing a glimpse into the military practices of the past. The sound of the gunshot echoes across the Parade Ground and is not for the faint-hearted!

The Master Gunner’s parade offers a truly immersive experience, combining military discipline with storytelling, historical exploration and a demonstration of the weaponry that once protected this strategic fortress. Featuring real people living with dementia, it captures strength, diversity, joy, skills, love, support, and optimism among its subjects.  It celebrates them as real people, not solely defined by their diagnosis.

By shifting the narrative from one of despair to possibility, we can better appreciate the capabilities and potential of people living with dementia. We can give hope to those with a recent diagnosis, reducing stigma and promoting a more inclusive and supportive society in the process.

This exhibition examines the many challenges Jersey faced following its release from five long years of German Occupation. After the celebrations are over, how do you manage the transition from military rule to civilian administration? How do you unite a population divided by loss, separation, and suspicions of collaboration? And how do you return the Island to prosperity after five years of economic isolation and mounting war debts?

The exhibition explores the years following Liberation, both the challenges, joys and opportunities, and traces the Island’s long road to recovery. It also considers how we have remembered Liberation as the years have passed and asks what we can learn from this experience.

Jersey is a special Island. It is tiny – a small dot on the world map. But its size belies the breadth of its unique and varied heritage. This NEW free exhibition explores what makes us Jersey.

The Island has been a home, a haven, a paradise, a battleground, a prison. It has been a place of dreams and disasters, of connection and isolation, of vulnerability and strength, of unique creatures and ancient landscapes, of pioneers and tradition.

Over the course of hundreds of thousands of years, four million people have been part of its history.

This exhibition celebrates some of our Island’s most significant moments and discovers how living here has affected the lives of just a few of those four million. Using our most special objects as witnesses to our past, it explores how we have come to be an Island and Islanders.

Prehistoric mammoth skulls and dwarf red deer bones tell the story of becoming an island; gold torques and ancient coin hoards explore the theme of Jersey as a sacred island; royal charters describe the Island as separate and different. During the Battle of Jersey and the Occupation, the Island was a place of conflict. At other times, Jersey was a place of refuge. Islands are also a little bit exotic and Jersey has attracted artists, honeymooners and holidaymakers. In this new exhibition, discover stories of our Island and explore what it means to be Jersey.

The story Beryl will share with you is a testament to the resilience, ingenuity and determination of Jersey’s people during the German Occupation.

Meet Beryl and hear about life in rural Jersey during the Occupation years of the Second World War.

In 1943, Hamptonne was partially requisitioned by German troops. The Pinel family remained as tenant farmers, playing a vital role in maintaining food supplies for the Jersey community, and the German troops.

Beryl embodied resourcefulness and determination. Her unwavering resilience ensured that despite the hardships, her family and others reliant on Hamptonne continued to receive vital sustenance. With imported goods scarce and rationing a constant strain, farmers like the Pinels had to adapt to an environment where every crop, every egg and every piece of livestock carried heightened importance.

Farming under Occupation was no small feat. The German forces imposed strict controls, which included the requisition of livestock, equipment and harvested crops. Farmers were required to record and report their yields, often surrendering much of their produce to the occupying authorities. These controls made it immensely difficult to provide for their families, let alone support the wider community. Yet Beryl found ways to sustain morale and maintain a sense of hope among those around her. Working tirelessly from dawn to dusk, she carefully managed what little resources they had, innovating where she could.

Beryl’s ability to adapt and persevere during these dark times underscores the essential role of farmers in preserving not only food supplies, but also the spirit of the Island.

Join Betsy in the Military Hospital kitchen to discover more about life in the Victorian era at Elizabeth Castle.

Betsy was born in the wind, salt and stone of Normandy, in a small coastal town not unlike Jersey. She grew up in a household where food mattered, not for luxury but for survival. Her mother cooked for fishermen and seasonal labourers, and Betsy learned early how to stretch rations and use every scrap to keep men fed when money was short.

Political unrest, poor harvests and the promise of steadier work drew her across the water to Jersey while she was still young. The crossing was short but the change was great – a new language, new rules and dealing with a deep suspicion of anyone “from France”.

However, Jersey suited Betsy more than she expected. The Island felt familiar with the sea, the unpredictable weather and the cautious but resilient people. She first found work in private kitchens and then was recommended for a position at Elizabeth Castle, where civilian cooks were often preferred for hospital work.

Sit and chat with him in the Military Hospital at the Castle. Though physically limited, you’ll discover that he remains mentally sharp and deeply loyal.

Albert was born into a working-class family in England, where prospects at home were limited and military service promised regular pay, meals and purpose. As a young man, he enlisted in the Royal Artillery, a branch of the Army that valued discipline, strength and technical skill.

He learned gunnery the hard way: lifting shot, swabbing barrels and standing watch in all weathers. Artillery service was physically demanding and unforgiving, but it offered pride and a sense of belonging.

Albert’s condition developed gradually rather than through a single dramatic wound. Years of exposure to cold stone, wet clothing and immobility during long watches caused chronic pain and weakness in his leg, possibly rheumatism, joint damage or nerve injury. Eventually, he became unfit for full duty.

Rather than discharge him immediately, the Army classified him as an invalid – a soldier still under orders but no longer combat-ready – and he was transferred to Elizabeth Castle. As an invalid gunner, Albert lives in a limbo between service and civilian life. He is expected to:
•Assist with light duties
•Clean equipment and quarters
•Carry messages within the garrison
•Help watch over other sick or injured men.

In 2012 the world’s largest Celtic hoard was discovered buried in a field in Jersey. This exhibition explores what might have led people to bury a hoard of 70,000 coins and jewellery in Jersey, 2000 years ago and looks closely at some of the items found within the hoard.

Explore the time when Roman armies marched through Europe, 2000 years ago, they left behind them a trail of death and destruction which almost wiped out the culture and civilization of the Celtic people who lived there. Using scientific and archaeological research we can learn more about the people that buried the hoard, about their lives and customs. Ground-breaking research can tell us more about the moment and the place the hoard was buried. It might even challenge some long-held ideas about why hoards were buried.

The Link Gallery is a small gallery at Jersey Museum where every month a local artist displays their work. Each month the exhibition changes, creating a year of local artwork covering a wide-range of topics, medias and artistic styles. We also invite local artistic groups, schools or arts organisations to use the Link Gallery.

Learn about the patience, precision and knowledge required to train the bird, ensuring it follows commands and performs well during a hunt. The process of training a hawk involved both building trust and an understanding of the bird’s natural instincts. Jean explains how he uses rewards and communication to establish a successful working relationship with his bird.

Gain an insight into the dedication, expertise and respect for nature that were essential to the success of this noble practice at a time when the hawk was not only a hunting companion but a symbol of status and power within the Tudor court.
