To celebrate International Women’s Day on 8th March, Soroptimist International Jersey are delighted to be invited by the CIOS to sell the book the Club commissioned to celebrate its 70 years milestone, “Inspiring Women of Jersey” by Penny Byrne.
A chance conversation at the Woman’s Day breakfast in 2020 led to this first of its kind book celebrating some of Jersey’s women who deserve a special place in the Island’s history including Louisa Gould who perished in a concentration camp for harbouring an escaped Russian POW as well as resistance activists Lucie Schwob and Suzanne Malherbe who distributed anti-Nazi leaflets who are amongst the sixteen women to feature in this book which is fabulously illustrated by Jersey art students from Grainville School, Highlands Collage, Jersey College for Girls, Haute Vallee and Victoria College.
Louisa Gould who hid an escaped Russian prisoner of war in her home. She was betrayed by neighbours which led to her arrest and deportation. She died in the gas chamber at Ravensbrück in February 1945.
Lucie Schwob poses defiantly in 1945, she and her partner Suzanne Malherbe distributed anti-Nazi leaflets by dropping them in the pockets of German soldiers or leaving them in strategic places to be found. In 1944 they were arrested and sentenced to death, but the sentences were never carried out.
Author Penny Byrne will be on hand to sign book during the bunker’s opening with all proceeds from the book’s sale (£9.99) being shared equally between Brightly and the Jersey Women’s Refuge.
Admission: £5 per adult, under 16s and CIOS members free.
