St Helier Capital & Character

The Royal Square was the Old Market Place of St Helier.

It has seen Royalists & Parliamentarians; Stuarts, Georgians & Victorians; fishing & cider, knitting & cattle.

It has seen Royalty and Jersey has its involvement in Wars that reached this Square.

The character of Jersey was formed in oh… so many different ways and this is ancient footprint on which we start our tour.

St Helier grew over the centuries from a marshy low lying basin surrounded on three sides by steep sided hills to become the islands capital. A castle & a fort defended our capital while a safe harbour was built for Jersey merchants.

We will also spy a few of the remnants to give us a clue how this was made possible.
