“Sea Glass has been in my heart for many years,” says Allison, a frequent visitor to the island who now lives in south London with her husband and daughters.
“I wanted the book to be many things – a message of hope an encouragement, a collection of magical short stories and a book for all generations. But, most of all, I wanted it to be a love letter to Jersey.”
Suitable for children, teenage and adult readers, the stories can be read in any order. Each one begins with a chance discovery of a piece of sea glass. As the glass is rubbed a magical tale unfolds.
Sea Glass is Allison’s eighth book published to date. Some of her other stories chronicle the adventures of a time-travelling 10-year-old (a character based on her mixed-race daughters) and others introduce young readers to a haughty talking tiger (her favourite animal).
Allison started writing stories when her daughters were little because they found it impossible to find chapter books with a main character that looked like them. Through her books, illustrations, storytelling sessions and story crafting workshops, she hopes to do her small bit to help more children see themselves at the centre of adventures.
