Over 20 local buildings across the Island will be turning green with our ‘Light Ups’ and flying NSPCC flags, raising awareness for NSPCC Jersey.
For children facing abuse, the winter nights are dark, long and lonely. That’s why we’re encouraging friends, families and colleagues to walk 5k (Walk for Children) and raise money amongst the longest nights of the year.
The NSPCC’s Childline received a call from a child around every 25 seconds at Christmas time. Calls about abuse, neglect, self-harm and anxiety – things no child should have to deal with. By joining in, every step participants take and every pound that they raise will help us be here for all children, even on the darkest nights this winter.
We’re encouraging you to Walk for Children and spot our Light Ups with friends and family, donating to NSPCC Jersey. We can’t wait to see the Island show its support for children with this event.
? When is the walk? Any date that works for you, but do it between 30th January and 3rd February and you can tie in seeing our local Light Ups!
? Where is it? Plan your own 5k route to suit you. Check out our beautiful Jersey map, with info below for some suggestions to tie in the Light Ups on your walk. Do an organised trail, a loop from your house, or plan your own route – the choices are endless.
? Why are we walking? Children need to know that we’re here for them, even on the darkest nights. Walk 5k and raise vital funds so we can make sure no call goes unanswered.
? How much should I raise? We’ll be grateful for any amount you can raise to goes towards our vital work.

We examine the evidence of the Island’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade, including Jersey’s Lieutenant-Governor Sir George Carteret who was a founder member of the Royal Africa Company that traded in ivory, gold and enslaved people in the 17th century; Captain François Messervy of Jersey who was killed in 1722 during an uprising on board his slave ship off the coast of Africa; and Jersey trader Josué Mauger who in 1752 advertised enslaved people for sale in Nova Scotia, Canada, where his business was based.
This exhibition takes place in the Victorian House at Jersey Museum, with its impressive mahogany staircase, because new research has shown that the house was built partly on the profits of the transatlantic slave trade. ‘Trade Roots’ explores Jersey’s historic links to slavery, from Islanders who owned mahogany plantations overseas and traded in slave-produced goods, to those who campaigned for the abolition of slavery.
Thought-provoking, and at times challenging, this exhibition exposes some uncomfortable new stories from Jersey’s past and examines the legacy and impact of transatlantic slavery on the Island’s community today.
Jersey Heritage Members are invited to discover the history of vraicking in the Island, with guest speaker Nick Jouault.
At Jersey Museum & Art Gallery
February marks the start of the traditional vraicking season, when Jersey farmers were permitted to cut vraic – seaweed – to fertilise their fields. Loose vraic could be collected at any time and it was spread over the land during the winter and then ploughed into the soil before potatoes were planted in late winter and spring.
Nowadays we may see the occasional farmer or keen gardener collecting vraic from the huge piles thrown up on the beaches by storms and there is plenty available for those who choose to follow this ancient tradition.
However, in times past, vraic was a highly prized commodity and it’s harvesting well regulated.
Vraicking expert Nick Jouault will be speaking in the AV Theatre at 6.30pm, for a short talk on the History of Vraicking.
Find out how vraic was collected, dried and distributed in the Island and discover the renewed interest in traditional, more sustainable farming techniques that are an important part of our Island’s rural story.
Welcome drinks will be served on arrival at 6pm in the Concourse and there will be an opportunity to speak with local producers ‘Ocean Harvest’ and ‘Tidal Rum’ about their vraic and seaweed infused products.

The monumental events of January 1781, when a French invasion force landed in Jersey
Britain was at war with France on and off throughout the 18th century. In the 1760s, Britain and Jersey set about a campaign of privateering, or licensing pirating, which inflicted considerable damage on French trade in the English Channel. It wasn’t long before retaliation was on the cards. This display explores that time using John Singleton Copley’s painting ‘The Death of Major Peirson’ and artefacts in the Jersey Heritage Collection. The exhibition also considers the abiding influence of these historic events upon the Island’s self-image.

Engraved stones found in Jersey are the the earliest art forms discovered in the British Isles
In 2010, 15,000 years after the first pioneer hunter-gatherers arrived in Jersey, archaeologists came to the area of Les Varines to the south-east of the Island, where stone artefacts had been discovered after the fields were ploughed. Excavations took place over the next eight years. They revealed hearths, paving stones of a camp and thousands of flint tools left behind by the hunters. Ten fragile fragments of engraved stone were also discovered, each marked with abstract designs. This display tells the story of the pioneer people, and investigates the meaning of these mysterious stones, which have been described as the earliest art forms to have yet been discovered in the British Isles.

From the 12th – 19th Feb Howard Davis Park will be transformed using light and sound, every evening from 6-9pm, to create Jersey’s first park illuminations event.
Explore the illuminated park and learn more about Jersey’s fantastic trees and the exciting scientific research that shows how trees communicate and share resources across a ‘wood wide web’.
As well as the illuminations, a bespoke soundscape has been developed for Dreaming Trees by sound artist and film score composer Tony Langlois.
See Jersey’s military heritage in a new light and help to support a non-profit organisation!
Evening tours of bunkers offer an unforgettable atmosphere when exploring.
We will visit sites not open to the public and places not visited by any of the commercial tours. Become a temporary member of the team and see how Jersey was made into an impregnable fortress!
£25pp or you can go private for £150 for up to 7 people (just select the “book entire tour option”).

Pat & Chat is an adult-only group that was started a year ago to give older members of our community a chance to meet with others, find out more about the services we offer to the Island and enjoy the company of some of the animals in our care over a cup of tea or coffee and some cakes and biscuits!
The aim of this group is to combat loneliness and promote good mental health.
Join us at the Animals’ Shelter between 2pm and 3.30pm.
Please note that the animals will vary depending on who we have available and suitable at the time.
We looking forward to welcoming you at Pat & Chat.

We would like to welcome your participation in the 5th Annual Big Channel Islands Beach Clean! Volunteers are encouraged to participate in beach cleans across the Channel Islands on 18-19 February 2023, to make our islands a safer place not only for ourselves but also for the amazing plant and wildlife we share them with. #loveyourbeach

Featuring an all-star cast including Spencer Tracey, Katharine Hepburn and Sidney Poitier, this drama depicts a couple who’s attitudes are challenged when their daughter returns home with her new African-American husband. Featuring stellar performances and an important subject matter, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is a classic of 1960s American cinema.

Doors: 7:30pm Show: 8:30pm – 10:45pm + encores
Brought up in the often tough, but community driven streets of Belfast Northern Ireland, Dom Martin has made a fairly ‘meteoric’ rise in terms of today’s industry, with his first ever EP release attracting BBC 6 music and BBC Radio 2 support – including a converted session with Cerys Matthews and an ever growing number of international tours and Festivals. His jaw dropping, entirely natural sounding and unforced/unschooled skill on acoustic guitar, matched with an authentic ‘Belfast Blues’ voice, brings to mind comparisons with many from (Glasgow born) John Martyn to Rory Gallagher, with nods to many in-between not least perhaps the likes of Van Morrison and Foy Vance.

Thursday/Friday February 23rd 24th (2023): Dom Martin (UK/IRELAND)
The Quintet comprises of the leading credible jazz musicians in Jersey and has become the cornerstone of Jazz in Jersey. The Band is in its 14 year of residency at the Savoy.
Performing a selection of Blue Note Record favourites by the greatest Jazz musicians and composers, including Duke Pearson, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Hank Mobley, Lee Morgan, Stanley Turrentine, and Freddie Hubbard.

The Jay Morris Spinathon will take place between 11:00 and 17:00 on 25 February at Club Carrefour in St Lawrence.
This sponsored event is open to anyone willing to spin for an hour slot at Club Carrefour, St Lawrence.
You are invited to spin to raise funds in memory of Jay Morris, a keen racing cyclist and founder member of the Velo Cycling Club, who died from cancer in 2003 aged 30. We hope that approx 60 people will take part, led by Club Carrefour’s instructors, who give their time free of charge for the event, which is also supported by Mark Pickford Cycles.
The first event was set up to raise awareness of Jay’s illness and he was due to take part but he died a few weeks before it was scheduled to take place. Since then Jay’s family has organised an annual Spinathon as a tribute to Jay and as a fundraiser for Jersey Hospice Care.
JH Members can discover how Jersey’s geology has created the landscape of valleys, bays and headlands and how the Ice Age formed soil which helps us grow arguably the world’s tastiest potato!
Explore the historic landscape of Mont à L’Abbé and the medieval fief of Bellozanne, with its historic buildings, two of which are dairy farms today. Discover how the geology determines the landscape of valleys, uplands and ancient route ways and how the Ice Age provided soil which contributes so much to the Island’s agriculture.
Cost per person is £5 plus EventBrite booking fee. Booking is essential as just 16 places are available.
This is an exclusive event for Jersey Heritage Members.

This Sunday – Jessica Lloyds Chays will add a touch of finesse to your evening with this stylish and sophisticated piano and vocal duo, accompanied by professional pianist Paul Mathews.
Light jazz sounds, ballads, love songs, and country blues are all part of their perfectly chosen charming repertoire.
Roberto’s Jazz Bar features the largest Gin collection in the Channel Islands. Let our bartenders to pair your meal with the ideal G&T

Hello just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The words in your article seem to be running off the screen in Internet explorer. I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I figured I’d post to let you know. The design and style look great though! Hope you get the issue solved soon. Cheers
