The Royal Square was the Old Market Place of St Helier.
It has seen Royalists & Parliamentarians; Stuarts, Georgians & Victorians; fishing & cider, knitting & cattle.
It has seen Royalty and Jersey has its involvement in Wars that reached this Square.
The character of Jersey was formed in oh… so many different ways and this is ancient footprint on which we start our tour.
St Helier grew over the centuries from a marshy low lying basin surrounded on three sides by steep sided hills to become the islands capital. A castle & a fort defended our capital while a safe harbour was built for Jersey merchants.
We will also spy a few of the remnants to give us a clue how this was made possible.
Join Blue Badge Guide Tracey Radford on a journey of discovery around Elizabeth Castle. Peel back the layers of Jersey’s history, climb battlements dating back to the 1590s, explore the turrets and bunkers and visit the Hermitage where St Helier, the Patron Saint of our Town is thought to have lived around 550 A.D.
Built on a rocky islet in St Aubin’s Bay, Elizabeth Castle has defended Jersey for more than 300 years. With Tracey discover the original site of the Abbey of St Helier, and visit the Governor’s House, once temporary home to important historical figures such as Sir Walter Raleigh and Charles II of England.
Take an entertaining trip through the Castle’s long and varied history. Discover just how significant our small Island was in important historical events, through the days of the Empire, Civil War and the World Wars of the 20th Century. Enjoy stories of battles, and their heroes. Explore occupation bunkers, Tudor stairways, and a Georgian Parade Ground, there is so much to see and admire. History, legends, and amazing views – this is a tour to be savoured.
As part of the Jersey Heritage attractions, Elizabeth Castle is accessible at low tide by foot, or, at both low and high tide, the Castle Ferry, which will transport you across the bay to and from the Castle. Elizabeth Castle is the perfect place to spend a day exploring Jersey’s history.

For more than two thousand years, the Blacksmith was arguably the most important artisan in the community, dramatically improving the productivity of farming, the efficiency of transport and the ability of scattered settlements to defend themselves.
Our Blacksmith, Stephen, will employ a small, hand operated 19th century forge, an anvil, hammers and tongs to forge items used daily on every farm from red hot metal.
An exhibition that explores how the right to protest has shaped and influenced the Island that we know today.
‘People! Power! Protest!’ explores the story of protest in Jersey, from the Corn Riots of 1769 to the Black Lives Matter movement of 2020.
Jersey may be small but Islanders have made their voices heard loud and clear over the years. Jersey has a fascinating history of protest in the Island and the theme of the exhibition coincides with the 250th anniversary of the Code of Laws that was introduced in response to the Corn Riots.
The exhibition explores how the right to protest has shaped and influenced the Island that we know today, from historic protests, such as the Corn Riots, to more recent protests such as Extinction Rebellion and Black Lives Matter.
Among the items on display is the official 18th century court records showing the redacted demands of the Corn Riots protestors, and the petition signed by thousands of people to try and save Queen’s Valley from being flooded in the 1980s. There are also the banners and placards from other protests over the years and photographs of significant post-war campaigns and demonstrations.
As you enter the exhibition ‘People! Power! Protest!’, you’ll see a stunning graffiti-style entrance wall by designer James Carter, of Midnight Industries. Celebrated local artist Ian Rolls has also created a new version of his iconic climate stripes mural in the environmental protest section of the exhibition. Visitors can to listen to stories of protest and share their own memories of their involvement in campaigns and demonstrations over the years.

Mary Le Brun will share stories and the latest tittle tattle from 1793 every Friday from May until end of September.
The year is 1793. There is much speculation around St Helier about a fabulous tower that Captain Philippe D’Auverge is erecting atop the medieval chapel at La Hougue Bie.
Mary Le Brun is known, just on occasion mind you, to engage in tittle tattle.
She simply cannot contain herself, and has rushed here to see if the rumours are true.
If your path should happen to cross with hers, she’ll no doubt be keen to divulge little-known rumours of the Captain’s adventurers and heroism.

Then you will be treated to a performance from Classical Brit nominees, Ida. As seen on BBC One and ITV, these four stunning sopranos bring you a collection of re-worked operatic arias, chart-topping hits, and musical theatre favourites. As Classical Brit nominees, they’ve been hailed as ‘remarkable’ and ‘breath-taking’ by Official London Theatre and ‘quite incredible’ by Gary Barlow. The girls went straight into the Classical Charts with their critically acclaimed album ‘Believe’. From West End Live in Trafalgar Square to headlining festivals in Australia, their recent video ‘Stars: A Les Mis Medley’ has been viewed over 100,000 times across social media. As a proud Jersey girl, Ida member Georgi Mottram was thrilled that the group performed their show at Jersey Opera House and at Government House. Ida has most recently been seen on ITV’s new show ‘Walk the Line’.

Mary Le Brun is known, just on occasion mind you, to engage in tittle tattle.

If your path should happen to cross with hers, she’ll no doubt be keen to divulge little-known rumours of the Captain’s adventurers and heroism.
Take a walk around St John’s Church then onto Sorel, Mourier Valley and the little hidden pathways in this area.

Be sure to save any plastic bags with nice designs or colours on them for this; and hunt out an old (preferably plain) t-shirt. Equipment and some old materials will be provided, however we do encourage you to bring your own household “rubbish” for upcycling.

Join Roger Noel on a fascinating exploration of the South-East corner of Jersey, from coastline to country lanes and back again.
This circular walk begins at La Rocque Harbour where you can hear about the fascinating history of this harbour and former fishing port. See where the invading French troops landed on a cold winter’s night of 5th January 1781, and learn of the 18th and 20th century fortifications that now protect this area of coastline, which is also a designated area of special interest, and protected Ramsar site.
From La Rocque you wander inland, venturing into the countryside, to enjoy fantastic views, catch glimpses of visiting and local birdlife, and hear a little of our agriculture and oyster farming industries.
The walk returns full circle, through the country lanes, following the route of the old Jersey Eastern Railway, and heads back to the beach, for a final stroll along the shoreline returning to La Rocque Harbour.
This gentle stroll, which encounters no hills and just a few steps, will take approximately three hours, with a chance of a well earned refreshment at the end.

Allies for Liberation day – Mark Sims and Martin Coxshall bring you songs revealing a shameless love affair with the island, and also….
Cheeky lyrical frolics, engaging storytelling, sing-a-long-a-bility laced with the inviting aromas of entertainment – people describe a Martin experience as something between Victoria Wood/ Tim Minchin-esq and the local legendary Sargent Pipons Lonely Hearts Club Band (AKA Wet Wet le Geyt / Le Brun DMC, Dumersque Street Preachers etc…)
I think it’s always sensible to explain the story behind titles like ‘Island Games Orgy’, ‘Bigger than an Elephant’, ‘Bum Sniffers Paradise’, ‘The Cracking Wet Tips’, ‘I Vote Therefore I Am’.
You might arrive at my gig with curious expectations, but you’ll leave with a feeling of elation that goes along with permissive naughtiness and a longing for a some more.
Available for bookings together or individually, every performance is going to change your life.

Descend to the Castle, which was once the headquarters of an 18th Century spymaster and Prince, and on to the harbour. The walk is in the most part a gentle ramble. Although it contains a flight of steep steps, it is possible to bypass these if necessary. Toilet facilities and refreshments available at the beginning and end of route. Liberty Bus Route 1 / 1a
The Royal Square was the Old Market Place of St Helier.

This circular walk begins at Longbeach car park, Grouville to take you on a time travelling adventure through Jersey History with spectacular views, especially on a clear day. Wander through the medieval village of Gorey, and up to the headland of Mont St Nicholas, to find a hidden 6000 year old megalithic tomb and a 19th Century defensive tower.

BATTERIE LOTHRINGEN COMMAND BUNKER – NOIRMONT POINT, ST. BRELADE’S
Originally intended as ‘Marine Battery 2’ armed with 4 modern quick firing 15cm turreted guns which never arrived thanks to the success of Allied bombing raids in Europe, Coastal Artillery Batterie Lothringen at Noirmont Point was the only Kriegsmarine (Naval) battery found in Jersey and armed with ex-battleship 15cm guns.
The ‘eyes’ of the battery is the CIOS maintained large multi-floored Command Bunker equipped with both a 6 meter range finder and Azimuth direction finding periscopes protected by armoured turrets. Originally equipped with state of the art equipment to calculate the ‘target’ location and how humidity wind etc. would affect the shell’s flight, today parts of the bunker are restored to how it looked when operational.
There is also information on Allied attacks that took place off the headland and items found in the area of relevance to the Battery and those who manned it, and you can even look through one of the periscopes! Knowledgeable members will be on hand to help you with your visit and the CIOS has also progressively opened up a large proportion of the Battery’s sealed bunkers behind the command bunker which allows the interested visitor to explore them and have a better understanding of how the battery worked thanks to numerous interpretation panels found on multiple structures.
£5 admission, children under 16 & CIOS members free of charge.
