1781 The Battle of Jersey and The Death of Major Peirson

    12:00 am
    2023.02.19

The monumental events of January 1781, when a French invasion force landed in Jersey

Britain was at war with France on and off throughout the 18th century. In the 1760s, Britain and Jersey set about a campaign of privateering, or licensing pirating, which inflicted considerable damage on French trade in the English Channel. It wasn’t long before retaliation was on the cards. This display explores that time using John Singleton Copley’s painting ‘The Death of Major Peirson’ and artefacts in the Jersey Heritage Collection. The exhibition also considers the abiding influence of these historic events upon the Island’s self-image.

Weapons of World War Two Exhibition

    9:30 am-4:30 pm
    2023.02.19
The Tower is a British 1770’s Defence Tower modified during the Second World War to become a German Anti-Aircraft Bunker.
It is now used for Pop-Up Exhibitions covering the island’s military history.
This winter we are going to feature the “Weapons of World War Two Exhibition” with a focus on the Occupation of the Channel Islands.
The Collection on display will be able to be handled and includes over 30 various types of German and Allied weapons.
This is a small Exhibition and all funds raised will be invested back into the maintenance of the Tower and other WW2 Projects.
Due to the size of the bunker, we are limited to small groups so please book online to avoid disappointment.
Bookings must be made online here: https://bookeo.com/jerseywartours…

    The Jersey Plaquettes

    12:00 am
    2023.02.20

Engraved stones found in Jersey are the the earliest art forms discovered in the British Isles

In 2010, 15,000 years after the first pioneer hunter-gatherers arrived in Jersey, archaeologists came to the area of Les Varines to the south-east of the Island, where stone artefacts had been discovered after the fields were ploughed. Excavations took place over the next eight years. They revealed hearths, paving stones of a camp and thousands of flint tools left behind by the hunters. Ten fragile fragments of engraved stone were also discovered, each marked with abstract designs. This display tells the story of the pioneer people, and investigates the meaning of these mysterious stones, which have been described as the earliest art forms to have yet been discovered in the British Isles.

    Trade Roots

    10:00 am-3:00 pm
    2023.02.20-2025.06.17

We examine the evidence of the Island’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade, including Jersey’s Lieutenant-Governor Sir George Carteret who was a founder member of the Royal Africa Company that traded in ivory, gold and enslaved people in the 17th century; Captain François Messervy of Jersey who was killed in 1722 during an uprising on board his slave ship off the coast of Africa; and Jersey trader Josué Mauger who in 1752 advertised enslaved people for sale in Nova Scotia, Canada, where his business was based.

This exhibition takes place in the Victorian House at Jersey Museum, with its impressive mahogany staircase, because new research has shown that the house was built partly on the profits of the transatlantic slave trade. ‘Trade Roots’ explores Jersey’s historic links to slavery, from Islanders who owned mahogany plantations overseas and traded in slave-produced goods, to those who campaigned for the abolition of slavery.

Thought-provoking, and at times challenging, this exhibition exposes some uncomfortable new stories from Jersey’s past and examines the legacy and impact of transatlantic slavery on the Island’s community today.

    Thursday/Friday February 23rd 24th (2023): Dom Martin (UK/IRELAND)
    Doors: 7:30pm Show: 8:30pm – 10:45pm + encores
Brought up in the often tough, but community driven streets of Belfast Northern Ireland, Dom Martin has made a fairly ‘meteoric’ rise in terms of today’s industry, with his first ever EP release attracting BBC 6 music and BBC Radio 2 support – including a converted session with Cerys Matthews and an ever growing number of international tours and Festivals. His jaw dropping, entirely natural sounding and unforced/unschooled skill on acoustic guitar, matched with an authentic ‘Belfast Blues’ voice, brings to mind comparisons with many from (Glasgow born) John Martyn to Rory Gallagher, with nods to many in-between not least perhaps the likes of Van Morrison and Foy Vance.

Dom Martin @ The Blue Note Bar

    7:30 pm-11:00 pm
    2023.02.24-2023.02.25
First time in Jersey! Blues instrumentalist of the year 2022, Acoustic blues artist of the year 2022, Acoustic blues artist of the year 2021, Acoustic blues artist of the year 2020 in the UK Blues Awards and best solo/acoustic act 2019 European Blues awards.

1781 The Battle of Jersey and The Death of Major Peirson

    12:00 am
    2023.02.25

    Jay Morris Spinathon

    11:00 am-5:00 pm
    2023.02.25
The Jay Morris Spinathon will take place between 11:00 and 17:00 on 25 February at Club Carrefour in St Lawrence.
This sponsored event is open to anyone willing to spin for an hour slot at Club Carrefour, St Lawrence.
You are invited to spin to raise funds in memory of Jay Morris, a keen racing cyclist and founder member of the Velo Cycling Club, who died from cancer in 2003 aged 30. We hope that approx 60 people will take part, led by Club Carrefour’s instructors, who give their time free of charge for the event, which is also supported by Mark Pickford Cycles.
The first event was set up to raise awareness of Jay’s illness and he was due to take part but he died a few weeks before it was scheduled to take place. Since then Jay’s family has organised an annual Spinathon as a tribute to Jay and as a fundraiser for Jersey Hospice Care.

Explore the historic landscape of Mont à L’Abbé and the medieval fief of Bellozanne, with its historic buildings, two of which are dairy farms today. Discover how the geology determines the landscape of valleys, uplands and ancient route ways and how the Ice Age provided soil which contributes so much to the Island’s agriculture.
