    The Jersey Plaquettes

    12:00 am
    2023.05.21

Engraved stones found in Jersey are the the earliest art forms discovered in the British Isles

In 2010, 15,000 years after the first pioneer hunter-gatherers arrived in Jersey, archaeologists came to the area of Les Varines to the south-east of the Island, where stone artefacts had been discovered after the fields were ploughed. Excavations took place over the next eight years. They revealed hearths, paving stones of a camp and thousands of flint tools left behind by the hunters. Ten fragile fragments of engraved stone were also discovered, each marked with abstract designs. This display tells the story of the pioneer people, and investigates the meaning of these mysterious stones, which have been described as the earliest art forms to have yet been discovered in the British Isles.

    Searching for Jersey’s Celts

    12:00 am
    2023.05.21

The world’s largest Celtic hoard was discovered in Jersey, this exhibition explores why people might have buried it there.

In 2012 the world’s largest Celtic hoard was discovered buried in a field in Jersey. This exhibition explores what might have led people to bury a hoard of 70,000 coins and jewellery in Jersey, 2000 years ago and looks closely at some of the items found within the hoard.

Explore the time when Roman armies marched through Europe, 2000 years ago, they left behind them a trail of death and destruction which almost wiped out the culture and civilization of the Celtic people who lived there. Using scientific and archaeological research we can learn more about the people that buried the hoard, about their lives and customs. Ground-breaking research can tell us more about the moment and the place the hoard was buried. It might even challenge some long-held ideas about why hoards were buried.

Virtual Reality (VR) The Best So Far

    12:00 am
    2023.05.21-2023.05.23

    VR: The Best So Far

    JAC meeting room / May 19, 20, 21 / free admission / all welcome

We are delighted to present these Virtual Reality (VR) films as examples of some of the best made so far in this exciting genre. Come along to the JAC and try out this new cinematic experience!

“These four works represent a broad overview of the power of virtual reality as an emerging narrative form. From an in-your-face documentary about climbing Mount Everest, to a ‘virtual oratorio’ that mourns the world’s lost languages, each experience uses the specific strengths of the format—three-dimensional imagery and user interactivity—to share stories and worlds beyond the scope of any other medium” – James Pallot, Curator.

    Notes on Blindness

Arnaud Colinart, Amaury La Burthe, Peter Middleton, James Spinney

    30 mins / 2016 / France

This beautifully crafted piece piece is based on cassette tape recordings made by theologian John Hull during the course of losing his sight in the early 1980s. VR is brilliantly used to show how other senses, especially sound, become more dominant as the writer’s vision fades. Notes on Blindness incorporates 360° imagery, spatialized audio, and 3D animations; interactive elements allow viewers to move the story forward, and trigger specific effects, by using a hand controller or simply directing their gaze at certain objects.

Everest VR: Journey to the Top of the World

    Jonathan Griffith / 15 mins / 2020 / USA

In 2018, filmmaker Jon Griffith and Sherpa Tenji attempted a historic ascent of Everest to honor the memory of Ueli Steck, a renowned climber who had died the year before while trying to reach the summit without using supplemental oxygen. This documentary account of the climb features visceral 360° footage and evocative time-lapse sequences, giving viewers the sensation that they are right alongside the climbers. Everest VR has been the best-selling non-gaming title in the Meta Quest store since its release in 2020, and has been remastered by Jon Griffith in 8K exclusively for the 13th Parish Festival.

    Last Whispers

    Lena Herzog / 30 mins / 2019 / USA

A memorial to the thousands of languages the world has lost over the last few decades, Last Whispers is also a rallying cry in support of the movement to preserve our linguistic diversity. Made by artist and photographer Lena Herzog in collaboration with the SOAS World Languages Institute, the piece immerses viewers in a gorgeously rendered, ghostly universe where fragments of lost tongues are whispered, murmured, recited, and sung in a “virtual oratorio” that also features processed natural sounds—including sonic renderings of the gravitational waves produced by dying stars.Last Whispers is now touring globally in conjunction with the UNESCO decree naming 2022-2032 the International Decade of Indigenous Languages

    Goliath

    May Abdalla, Barry Gene Murphy / 25 mins / 2019 / USA

Goliath deploys bold graphics and video game-play to tell the true story of a man diagnosed with schizophrenia. The title character works through his condition by becoming involved in the online gaming community, where he finds acceptance and support. VR is used to question the relationship between the “real” world and our perceptions of it, and encourages empathy and mutual understanding: “All realities are imagined, but the ones we share, endure.” Narrated by Tilda Swinton, the piece features several highly inventive uses of the VR hand controllers, including emulations of classic video gameplay.

With thanks to Jersey Gaming Hub.

    Trade Roots

    10:00 am-3:00 pm
    2023.05.21-2025.09.15

We examine the evidence of the Island’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade, including Jersey’s Lieutenant-Governor Sir George Carteret who was a founder member of the Royal Africa Company that traded in ivory, gold and enslaved people in the 17th century; Captain François Messervy of Jersey who was killed in 1722 during an uprising on board his slave ship off the coast of Africa; and Jersey trader Josué Mauger who in 1752 advertised enslaved people for sale in Nova Scotia, Canada, where his business was based.

This exhibition takes place in the Victorian House at Jersey Museum, with its impressive mahogany staircase, because new research has shown that the house was built partly on the profits of the transatlantic slave trade. ‘Trade Roots’ explores Jersey’s historic links to slavery, from Islanders who owned mahogany plantations overseas and traded in slave-produced goods, to those who campaigned for the abolition of slavery.

Thought-provoking, and at times challenging, this exhibition exposes some uncomfortable new stories from Jersey’s past and examines the legacy and impact of transatlantic slavery on the Island’s community today.

    CIOS BUNKER OPEN THIS WEEKEND!
BATTERIE LOTHRINGEN COMMAND BUNKER – Noirmont Point, St. Brelade’s Bay
    Sunday May 21st 2-5pm
Originally intended as ‘Marine Battery 2’ armed with 4 modern quick firing 15cm turreted guns which never arrived thanks to the success of Allied bombing raids in Europe, Coastal Artillery Batterie Lothringen at Noirmont Point was the only Kriegsmarine (Naval) battery found in Jersey and armed with ex-battleship 15cm guns.
The ‘eyes’ of the battery is the CIOS maintained large multi-floored Command Bunker equipped with both a 6 meter range finder and Azimuth direction finding periscopes protected by armoured turrets. Originally equipped with state of the art equipment to calculate the ‘target’ location and how humidity wind etc. would affect the shell’s flight, today parts of the bunker are restored to how it looked when operational.
There is also information on Allied attacks that took place off the headland and items found in the area of relevance to the Battery and those who manned it, and you can even look through one of the periscopes! Knowledgeable members will be on hand to help you with your visit and the CIOS has also progressively opened up a large proportion of the Battery’s sealed bunkers behind the command bunker which allows the interested visitor to explore them and have a better understanding of how the battery worked thanks to numerous interpretation panels found on multiple structures.

1781 The Battle of Jersey and The Death of Major Peirson

    12:00 am
    2023.05.23

The monumental events of January 1781, when a French invasion force landed in Jersey

Britain was at war with France on and off throughout the 18th century. In the 1760s, Britain and Jersey set about a campaign of privateering, or licensing pirating, which inflicted considerable damage on French trade in the English Channel. It wasn’t long before retaliation was on the cards. This display explores that time using John Singleton Copley’s painting ‘The Death of Major Peirson’ and artefacts in the Jersey Heritage Collection. The exhibition also considers the abiding influence of these historic events upon the Island’s self-image.

    The Jersey Plaquettes

    12:00 am
    2023.05.24

    12:00 am
    2023.05.24

    Trade Roots

    10:00 am-3:00 pm
    2023.05.24-2025.09.18

During the 1800’s the Parade area saw military exploits and rapid commercial development whilst Westmount, or Gallow’s Hill, was the executioner’s domain. Then as land was reclaimed the Esplanade area filled with fancy hotels, a trainline and busy wharehouses.

Get a glimpse into this historic area on this 2 hour circular walk starting from the Town Hall.

1781 The Battle of Jersey and The Death of Major Peirson

    12:00 am
    2023.05.26

    12:00 am
    2023.05.27

    12:00 am
    2023.05.27

    Trade Roots

    10:00 am-3:00 pm
    2023.05.27-2025.09.21
