    30 Bays in 30 Days

    12:00 am
    2023.07.30-2023.08.29

    Jump this July!

In 2016, we launched a fundraising initiative in conjunction with the National Trust for Jersey, called 30 Bays in 30 Days – and what a great success it was! We are delighted to confirm that the event will be held again this year and we hope that as many people as possible will register to swim a minimum of 30 strokes in 30 bays from the list attached. It all takes place between 1 and 31 July. Don’t worry if you can’t fit it all in during July – please carry on swimming in August so you can tick those bays off your personal list.

Maybe make an afternoon of walking from bay to bay to tick a few off or plan a couple of coastal swims with friends or family, followed by a picnic or BBQ? It’s all about creating great memories and enjoying the summer fun.

We are lucky to have so many amazing places to swim off Jersey, although some places may present a challenge to get to. If you would like to get involved, but think that you will be unable to swim at every bay on the list, you are free to choose which bays work for you, to complete 30 swims at those to complete the challenge.

We are fortunate to live on a beautiful island with many lovely beaches. Please remember to only leave footprints after your swims, to help keep the beaches and bays looking this way.

We are hopeful that we will be able to have an opening / celebration swim this year. Please keep an eye on our facebook page for more details!

This year we are asking all participant’s to raise a minimum of £30 in sponsorship. Please do set up your fundraising page through Race Nation.

This year, we will be offering fantastic medals to the those who raise the following in sponsorship:

For the first 20 Children who raise £200 or more.

For the first 5 Adults who raise £500 or more

For the first 5 Teams who raise £500 or more

For the first 5 Families who raise £500 or more

Head to the event’s website for lots more information. Please also like and share our Facebook and Instagram pages, to be kept up to date with information in the lead up to the event and throughout July.

Resistance Nest Millbrook - Open Day

    2:00 pm-5:00 pm
    2023.07.30

    CIOS BUNKER OPEN THIS WEEKEND!

RESISTANCE NEST MILLBROOK ANTI-TANK GUN CASEMATE

    Sunday 30th July 2-5pm

This bunker is located on St. Aubin’s Bay promenade opposite La Motte Ford next to the ‘Old Station Café.
An example of a flanking anti-tank gun casemate mounting an ex-Czech 4.7cm PakK 36 (t) anti-tank gun with a coaxial MG 37 (t) machine gun which was built into a Victorian slipway to both block access off the beach to an attacker and camouflage the bunker behind a granite sea wall.
The bunker largely escaped post war stripping out and scrap drives by being buried thanks to a nearby resident complaining about this eyesore spoiling the view (!) and today boasts a near time capsule appearance from original panelling with original pin up posters still attached to rare complete examples of the ventilation equipment used to protect the bunker’s crew from gas attack!
The bunker is also unusual for mounting a small observation bell with a replica now replaces the original removed for scrap in c1948. Also, the bunker’s lighting still uses the original German cabling and details of the bunker’s wartime operation are provided thanks to Herr Henkel who commanded the bunker in 1943/44.
Admission £3 CIOS members and under 16s free!

1781 The Battle of Jersey and The Death of Major Peirson

    12:00 am
    2023.07.31

The monumental events of January 1781, when a French invasion force landed in Jersey

Britain was at war with France on and off throughout the 18th century. In the 1760s, Britain and Jersey set about a campaign of privateering, or licensing pirating, which inflicted considerable damage on French trade in the English Channel. It wasn’t long before retaliation was on the cards. This display explores that time using John Singleton Copley’s painting ‘The Death of Major Peirson’ and artefacts in the Jersey Heritage Collection. The exhibition also considers the abiding influence of these historic events upon the Island’s self-image.

    The Jersey Plaquettes

    12:00 am
    2023.08.01

Engraved stones found in Jersey are the the earliest art forms discovered in the British Isles

In 2010, 15,000 years after the first pioneer hunter-gatherers arrived in Jersey, archaeologists came to the area of Les Varines to the south-east of the Island, where stone artefacts had been discovered after the fields were ploughed. Excavations took place over the next eight years. They revealed hearths, paving stones of a camp and thousands of flint tools left behind by the hunters. Ten fragile fragments of engraved stone were also discovered, each marked with abstract designs. This display tells the story of the pioneer people, and investigates the meaning of these mysterious stones, which have been described as the earliest art forms to have yet been discovered in the British Isles.

    Searching for Jersey’s Celts

    12:00 am
    2023.08.01

The world’s largest Celtic hoard was discovered in Jersey, this exhibition explores why people might have buried it there.

In 2012 the world’s largest Celtic hoard was discovered buried in a field in Jersey. This exhibition explores what might have led people to bury a hoard of 70,000 coins and jewellery in Jersey, 2000 years ago and looks closely at some of the items found within the hoard.

Explore the time when Roman armies marched through Europe, 2000 years ago, they left behind them a trail of death and destruction which almost wiped out the culture and civilization of the Celtic people who lived there. Using scientific and archaeological research we can learn more about the people that buried the hoard, about their lives and customs. Ground-breaking research can tell us more about the moment and the place the hoard was buried. It might even challenge some long-held ideas about why hoards were buried.

    Trade Roots

    10:00 am-3:00 pm
    2023.08.01-2025.11.26

We examine the evidence of the Island’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade, including Jersey’s Lieutenant-Governor Sir George Carteret who was a founder member of the Royal Africa Company that traded in ivory, gold and enslaved people in the 17th century; Captain François Messervy of Jersey who was killed in 1722 during an uprising on board his slave ship off the coast of Africa; and Jersey trader Josué Mauger who in 1752 advertised enslaved people for sale in Nova Scotia, Canada, where his business was based.

This exhibition takes place in the Victorian House at Jersey Museum, with its impressive mahogany staircase, because new research has shown that the house was built partly on the profits of the transatlantic slave trade. ‘Trade Roots’ explores Jersey’s historic links to slavery, from Islanders who owned mahogany plantations overseas and traded in slave-produced goods, to those who campaigned for the abolition of slavery.

Thought-provoking, and at times challenging, this exhibition exposes some uncomfortable new stories from Jersey’s past and examines the legacy and impact of transatlantic slavery on the Island’s community today.

    Longhouse Tour and Fire Lighting

    10:00 am-4:00 pm
    2023.08.01

This 20-metre long replica Longhouse was built over two years by volunteers, with oversight from Ancient Technology expert Luke Winter. Since it was officially opened in 2019, volunteers have performed day-to-day maintenance tasks using authentic techniques and tools, and act as guides, demonstrators and interpreters to explain the project to visitors. They are also continually researching, experimenting and training to acquire more Stone Age skills to share, including basket-making and flintknapping.

Every Tuesday, a member of the volunteer team lights a fire in the Longhouse using authentic techniques. This adds warmth to the building but also stops any insect infestation in the traditional straw roof. During your visit, the volunteer will also talk about the traditional methods used and the lessons learned during the build.

If speaking to a Longhouse volunteer is going to be the highlight of your trip to La Hougue Bie, please call +44 (0) 1534 853 823 before you visit to check they are confirmed for that date.

1781 The Battle of Jersey and The Death of Major Peirson

    12:00 am
    2023.08.03

Meet Rose Le Brun, the Bouonnefemme at Hamptonne, who will let you in on local secrets and village gossip!

Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday / 10am to 4pm

Meet Rose Le Brun, the Bouonnefemme at Hamptonne, who will let you in on local secrets and village gossip. Rose’s predecessor, Old Maud, had been at Hamptonne for years, but she travelled to St Aubin to see family and never returned. Perhaps the plague got her – they had a lot of it down there.

Rose was born in the parish of St Lawrence in 1606 and lived in the Vingtaine du Coin Motier, where Hamptonne House stands, all her life. She serves as housekeeper for Jurat Laurens Hamptonne, who himself witnessed Rose lugging a large poutchie of apples up the hill, and thought her constitution would be fitting to take charge of his household.

    The Jersey Plaquettes

    12:00 am
    2023.08.04

    12:00 am
    2023.08.04

    2023.08.04-2025.11.29

Trinity Parish Walk – Follies, Fields and Fiefs

    10:00 am-12:00 pm
    2023.08.04
Come along on a walk around the beautiful and rural parish of Trinity

The walk encompasses roads, mud tracks and half a dozen lesser-known Jersey National Trust places of interest. Commencing at Jardin d’Olivet, we will amble through country lanes, taking in a well-head and woodlands on our way to an inconveniently placed lavoir.

Dating from 1834, we will pause to spare a thought for the poor tenants of Le Fief de l’Abbesse de Caen who would have struggle to bring their laundry to this public washing place. Emerging onto La Falaize we will be rewarded with spectacular coastal views across the Les Echrehous and beyond to Normandy.
