  • Searching for Jersey’s Celts
    All day
    2024.01.01-2024.12.31

The world’s largest Celtic hoard was discovered in Jersey, this exhibition explores why people might have buried it there.

In 2012 the world’s largest Celtic hoard was discovered buried in a field in Jersey. This exhibition explores what might have led people to bury a hoard of 70,000 coins and jewellery in Jersey, 2000 years ago and looks closely at some of the items found within the hoard.

Explore the time when Roman armies marched through Europe, 2000 years ago, they left behind them a trail of death and destruction which almost wiped out the culture and civilization of the Celtic people who lived there. Using scientific and archaeological research we can learn more about the people that buried the hoard, about their lives and customs. Ground-breaking research can tell us more about the moment and the place the hoard was buried. It might even challenge some long-held ideas about why hoards were buried.

  • Dementia Jersey 50 Mile Challenge
    1:00 am
    2024.01.01-2024.01.15

We’re challenging everyone to get their steps in this January to help raise funds to support people living in Jersey with dementia.
You can choose how and when you want to get your miles in. Walk, run or skip, it’s up to you! All you need to do is complete 50 miles throughout the month of January. That’s roughly 1.6 miles a day – ditch the car and walk to work, you won’t just get your miles in, but you’ll save money on petrol and parking too! Or plan weekend walks with the family.
This is the perfect challenge for all the family to get involved in and get those steps in!

We examine the evidence of the Island’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade, including Jersey’s Lieutenant-Governor Sir George Carteret who was a founder member of the Royal Africa Company that traded in ivory, gold and enslaved people in the 17th century; Captain François Messervy of Jersey who was killed in 1722 during an uprising on board his slave ship off the coast of Africa; and Jersey trader Josué Mauger who in 1752 advertised enslaved people for sale in Nova Scotia, Canada, where his business was based.

This exhibition takes place in the Victorian House at Jersey Museum, with its impressive mahogany staircase, because new research has shown that the house was built partly on the profits of the transatlantic slave trade. ‘Trade Roots’ explores Jersey’s historic links to slavery, from Islanders who owned mahogany plantations overseas and traded in slave-produced goods, to those who campaigned for the abolition of slavery.

Thought-provoking, and at times challenging, this exhibition exposes some uncomfortable new stories from Jersey’s past and examines the legacy and impact of transatlantic slavery on the Island’s community today.

We are what we eat! An exhibition celebrating Jersey’s rich heritage of farming, fishing and food

Our Island identity is shaped by the landscape, our south-facing côtils, the sea that surrounds us. From our iconic Jersey Royal potatoes to our world-famous Jersey cows to our stunning shellfish, Jersey is celebrated for its food.

Step back in time to find an Island covered in apple orchards when cider was our major export, explore the future of farming in an Island with a growing population, and discover some of our local specialities like the famous ‘merveille’ or Jersey wonder.

Our new exhibition will give you plenty of food for thought!

  • Searching for Jersey’s Celts
    All day
    2024.01.13-2025.01.12

  • Trade Roots
    10:00 am-3:00 pm
    2024.01.13-2026.05.10

Dress up warmly, crown the King and Queen of the Wassail, dance with the Jersey Lilies and enjoy bread, cheese and a glass of warm cider together… it will be lovely. As Hamptonne is open this January to all visitors, parking will be on a first come, first serve basis in the main car park only.

We encourage you to arrive early and car share, ready to start at 1pm! Pick up an exclusive ‘bread and cheese’ JH Members’ ticket at reception for entrance to the Cider Barn. You can also join the merriment and come by foot, bus or bicycle.

  • Searching for Jersey’s Celts
    All day
    2024.01.19-2025.01.18

  • Trade Roots
    10:00 am-3:00 pm
    2024.01.19-2026.05.16

Thought-provoking, and at times challenging, this exhibition exposes some uncomfortable new stories from Jersey’s past and examines the legacy and impact of transatlantic slavery on the Island’s community today.

      2024.01.25-2025.01.24

• Seymour Tower – Intertidal Walk
    12:45 pm-3:45 pm
    2024.01.27

Walk out to the isolated L’Avarison Islet and Seymour Tower, on the exposed seabed off the SE coast of Jersey

    Seymour Tower

Situated roughly to the south of the slip, Seymour Tower stands like a sentinel above the rocky terrain which surrounds it, within the RAMSAR Site, which is an internationally recognised and protected wetland, extending along the south east coast from La Collette in the west to Gorey in the east of the island of Jersey.

Accessible on foot at most low tides, it is not a place to be caught out by the rising tide. Due to the topography of the area, the rising sea can easily encircle the inexperienced or unwary walker or low water fisherman, and strong tidal currents can make this area treacherous. Every year people are rescued after finding themselves cut-off.

    What to expect

This guided walk will take you out to the tower along the seabed, through shallow pools and tidal streams, passing over gravel banks and shingle as we follow the tide out. Weather permitting we will stop at the tower, to explore or enjoy a snack or light refreshment if you have them.

Admire the vistas from the raised platform, across the spectacular expanse of rocky seabed and northwest towards Noirmont Point to northeast to St Catherine’s Breakwater, across the oyster beds and mussel poles in Grouville Bay. If the weather is clear, the arrays of wind turbines can be seen along the French coast.

Change your perspective of the beach, and discover some of the superbly adapted organisms that thrive in the area, despite being left behind by the tide.

    Protection of Flora and Fauna

The intertidal zone is a diverse and fragile environment, and we must do all we can to minimise the effect we have on this protected ecology if we want to protect it for future generations. By joining this walk, you are agreeing to abide by some basic guidelines: to walk with care and watch where you put you feet; to be gentle with any creatures that live in the intertidal, in and on the seabed and on or under rocks, and if you handle them do so with wet hands; to replace and rock and seaweed that may be lifted while exploring; and to be quiet and not disturb any resting seabirds or marine wildlife.

We all have a duty of care to protect this unique environment and limit the damage we cause, or allow to be caused by our actions. Please do not litter, and no dogs are permitted.

    Safety Guidance

To participate in this walk, you will need to be reasonable fit, able to walk unassisted for several hours and prepared to be responsible for your own safety. Children must be accompanied by responsible adults. I carry a First Aid Kit and the Coastguard will be informed when we start and finish the walk.

    Snacks and hydration

This walk is several hours long, so please bring a snack and drink, especially if the weather is forecast to be warm. We will stop at the tower, weather permitting, for a break. Please hold onto any packaging, and dispose of it appropriately when we return to shore.

    Clothing and footwear

Dress in layers, appropriate for the weather. We will be exposed to elements during the walk, and it may be chilly if it is windy. Wear wellies or other sturdy footwear that you don’t mind getting wet. Be prepared to walk through shallow water, and bring hiking poles or sticks if you use them. Wellies are avaiable to rent for the duration of the walk if needed, see ticket section.

    Potential hazards

Please arrive 10 – 15 minutes early, so that we can leave on time.

Participants will need to be able to keep up a steady pace on the way out to the Tower and on the return. The surface is uneven and at times soft. There will be rocks, sand and gravel underfoot and seaweed which can be slippery. We may also encounter creatures that bite, sting or pinch as we explore, so avoid handling them where possible. There may be shallow standing water and streams, and at times may need to wade through mid-calf depth water.

The steps up to Seymour Tower are steep and quite narrow, so please take care when ascending and descending.

Parking, bus route and public amenities

Limited parking is available on the slipway opposite Seymour Pub, but there are no public amenities. The nearest public toilets are at Gorey Common or La Rocque.

Liberty Bus route No 1 stops at the top of the slip on the way to St Helier, or on towards Gorey from outside Seymour Pub, approximately every 15 – 20 minutes.

    Disclaimer

Your participation in the walk is at your own risk and I shall not be held liable under any circumstances for any matter arising out of your participation. I accept no responsibility or liability for loss, damage or injury, other than for matters which I am not legally able to exclude or limit liability, and I am insured for this activity.

    8:00 pm-10:00 pm
    2024.01.27

Spero is on a journey to the moon, a young person ruminates, and Wayne learns to dance. After the success of his debut solo show, Chrome Yellow, Wayne returns with a new introspective play born out of his own aversion to dance.

For weeks Wayne worked intensely (bruises, sweat and tears) to learn how to dance in a last-ditch attempt to connect with the art form and uncover the root of his paralysing antipathy. The journey resulted in so much more than dance: it is a meditation on the importance of storytelling, movement, and what it means to be creative.

Wayne would like to thank Victoria Hermitage for her choreography and inspiration during the development of the play.

Combining dance with Wayne’s own allegorical story and the words of local children, don’t miss this second chance to see Indigo Moon!

  • Trade Roots
    10:00 am-3:00 pm
    2024.01.28-2026.05.25

    • Trade Roots
      10:00 am-3:00 pm
      2024.01.28-2026.05.25

    All day
    2024.01.30-2024.05.03

Something strange and delightful has been happening at Hamptonne over the winter!

Do you believe in magic? A visit to Hamptonne and La Hougue Bie may just change your mind.

Something strange and delightful has been happening there over the winter. Les P’tits Faîtchieaux, or little folk, are back and they have been busy creating a new home. In fact, they have been so busy, we think there could be a whole village!

We hope the fairies will stay for some time and we’d like them to settle in properly before being visited by your little people, so take the opportunity to visit them from the end of January.

  • Wild Islands: through the lens

More than 200 images, printed on banners, capture the incredibly rich biodiversity we have in the Channel Islands – from birds, insects and mammals, to wildflowers, fungi and sea life, with a focus particularly upon Jersey.

  • Longhouse Tour and Fire Lighting
    10:00 am-4:00 pm
    2024.01.30-2024.12.31

his 20-metre long replica Longhouse was built over two years by volunteers, with oversight from Ancient Technology expert Luke Winter. Since it was officially opened in 2019, volunteers have performed day-to-day maintenance tasks using authentic techniques and tools, and act as guides, demonstrators and interpreters to explain the project to visitors. They are also continually researching, experimenting and training to acquire more Stone Age skills to share, including basket-making and flintknapping.

Every Tuesday, a member of the volunteer team lights a fire in the Longhouse using authentic techniques. This adds warmth to the building but also stops any insect infestation in the traditional straw roof. During your visit, the volunteer will also talk about the traditional methods used and the lessons learned during the build.

If speaking to a Longhouse volunteer is going to be the highlight of your trip to La Hougue Bie, please call +44 (0) 1534 853 823 before you visit to check they are confirmed for that date.

  • England & Son
    7:30 pm-9:30 pm
    2024.01.30

Set when The Great Devouring comes home, England & Son is a one-man play written specifically for the award-winning political comedian Mark Thomas by award-winning playwright Ed Edwards (The Political History of Smack and Crack, Paines Plough’s Roundabout, Soho and UK tour).

This is the first play Mark has ever performed in that he has not written himself.

With some deep, dark laughs – and some deep, dark love – along the way, England & Son emerges from characters Mark knew in his childhood and Ed’s lived experience in jail. Prepare for Mark to take you on a kaleidoscopic odyssey where disaster capitalism, empire, stolen youth and stolen wealth merge into the simple tale of a working-class boy who just wants his dad to smile at him.
