    Searching for Jersey’s Celts

    12:00 am
    2024.04.21-2025.04.21

The world’s largest Celtic hoard was discovered in Jersey, this exhibition explores why people might have buried it there.

In 2012 the world’s largest Celtic hoard was discovered buried in a field in Jersey. This exhibition explores what might have led people to bury a hoard of 70,000 coins and jewellery in Jersey, 2000 years ago and looks closely at some of the items found within the hoard.

Explore the time when Roman armies marched through Europe, 2000 years ago, they left behind them a trail of death and destruction which almost wiped out the culture and civilization of the Celtic people who lived there. Using scientific and archaeological research we can learn more about the people that buried the hoard, about their lives and customs. Ground-breaking research can tell us more about the moment and the place the hoard was buried. It might even challenge some long-held ideas about why hoards were buried.

    Walk This Way!

    12:00 am
    2024.04.21-2024.05.20

Walk This Way! in April for Jersey Hospice Care…

In celebration of the arrival of Spring, this is a great way to get more active, enjoy the lighter days, and get out and about with family and friends.

    WHAT IS THE CHALLENGE?

Take your pick! All we encourage you to do is walk every day for 30 days between 1 – 30 April. But everyone is different so here are some ideas for how you can take on the challenge:

    • Walk a mile every day for 30 days.
    • Walk 10,000 steps every day for 30 days.
    • Challenge friends and family to see who can walk the most steps during the month.
    • Sign up as a team of 4 and challenge another team (think inter-office or inter-firm rivalry!) to see who can walk the most steps during the month. You could also choose a destination that you could aim to ‘walk’ to – for example, a team of 4 could cover 660 miles during the month (based on 10,000 steps a day) which would take them as far as Denmark or Spain! So where could you walk to?!

You can walk whenever you like – so whether it’s as the sun is rising to start the day off right, or when it’s setting to celebrate the end of the day, your commute to and from work, to collect shopping, walk the dog, in your lunch hour, or when the children are in bed – the timing is up to you and what fits in with your day!

You can use it as a good excuse to explore all corners of the island with these self guided walking routes from Visit Jersey:

North Coast  —  South Coast  —  East Coast  —  West Coast

And some other walks to give you inspo:

    Walks from dawn to dusk

    Woodland walks

    Buggy friendly walks

    Coast to Coast walks

WHAT DOES IT COST TO TAKE PART?

    Adult: £10

    Child (Under 16): £5

    Team of 4: £40

    Master Gunner

Stand to attention for the Midday Parade and prepare yourself for the resounding bang of the signal gun

    Trade Roots

    10:00 am-3:00 pm
    2024.04.21-2026.08.17

We examine the evidence of the Island’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade, including Jersey’s Lieutenant-Governor Sir George Carteret who was a founder member of the Royal Africa Company that traded in ivory, gold and enslaved people in the 17th century; Captain François Messervy of Jersey who was killed in 1722 during an uprising on board his slave ship off the coast of Africa; and Jersey trader Josué Mauger who in 1752 advertised enslaved people for sale in Nova Scotia, Canada, where his business was based.

This exhibition takes place in the Victorian House at Jersey Museum, with its impressive mahogany staircase, because new research has shown that the house was built partly on the profits of the transatlantic slave trade. ‘Trade Roots’ explores Jersey’s historic links to slavery, from Islanders who owned mahogany plantations overseas and traded in slave-produced goods, to those who campaigned for the abolition of slavery.

Thought-provoking, and at times challenging, this exhibition exposes some uncomfortable new stories from Jersey’s past and examines the legacy and impact of transatlantic slavery on the Island’s community today.

    2:00 pm-5:00 pm
    2024.04.21

STRONGPOINT CORBIERE 10.5cm COASTAL DEFENCE GUN CASEMATE “KANONE 2”

    https://youtu.be/BE5zvW2TonI

    CIOS BUNKERS OPEN THIS WEEKEND!

STRONGPOINT CORBIERE – LA CORBIERE HEADLAND, ST. BRELADE.
THREE RESTORED BUNKERS AND A TUNNEL! SUNDAY 21ST APRIL 2-5PM
With construction staring in late 1942, Strongpoint Corbiere formed a key part of the defences of St. Ouen’s Bay and also boasted several bunker designs unique to Jersey. The CIOS have currently restored three bunkers within the Strongpoint which are authentically restored to their original wartime condition and displays are based around information given by the soldiers who actually served there! There is also information on the forced labourers who constructed the site and interactions between the soldiers with nearby civilians as well as an escape attempt which ended in failure on the causeway to the lighthouse in September 1944. The site gives a ‘working atmosphere’ feel to the visitor and you are allowed to touch and interact with some of the exhibits.
Knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to guide you and give details of the fortifications and the actual soldiers who manned the complex and what they got up to along with an audio commentary explaining the original crew.
5cm M19 AUTOMATIC FORTRESS MORTAR BUNKER AND INTERCONNECTED 6-LOOPHOLED HEAVY MACHINE GUN TURRET BUNKER
The M19 mortar bunker has been restored to a high standard, and thanks to the post war return of its wartime commander, Engelbert Hoppe, tells the story of the crew who actually manned the bunker and what they got up to during the last year of the Occupation. The bunker is uniquely connected to a neighbouring 6-loopholed heavy machine gun turret bunker by an impressive underground corridor. This bunker also served as the Strongpoint’s Command bunker as well as the main hub for both telephone and radio communications.
10.5cm COASTAL DEFENCE GUN CASEMATE “KANONE 2”
Strongpoint Corbiere was unusual for have two ex-French 10.5cm K 331 (f) coastal defence gun casemates, one facing south (designated “Kanone 1” = Cannon 1) was decimated in the post war scrap drives while the north-facing “Kanone 2” escaped the post war scrap metal drives and not only retains the original gun but also a wealth of other rare armoured parts. Restored to near operation condition it also tells the story of former crew member Horst Herrmann who manned this casemate from late 1943 and was involved in several live firing exercises of the gun.
Admission £6 under 16s and CIOS members free.
    Just turn up!

The gardens are extensive and include Mediterranean, kitchen garden and herb areas.  Open by kind permission of Mr and Mrs Marcus Binney.

    Directions, Parking and Accessibility

From Victoria Avenue, at La Motte Ford, turn north up La Rue du Galet, then across the junction and up Mont Felard. Continue up La Grande Route de St Laurent and just before St Lawrence Parish Church there will be signs to turn right into La Rue de Bas. Turn immediately into the entrance to Domaine des Vaux which is directly in front of you.

Parking is on grass in the top part of the garden. For the disabled drop off point, please continue down the tarmac driveway to the house.

The Arena garden and the courtyard where cream teas are served are accessed up a couple of steps from the driveway so not easy for wheelchair users. There is an unmade track down the valley to the woodland areas which is suitable for children’s buggies.

We look forward to seeing you there!
